My Atlantic Salt Wharnie mod step by step - pics

#1

Post by Jazz »

Well, this is my new favorite knife and I had to share the process and some pics for fun - I apologize ahead of time for my lack of camera skills...

Here's a before pic - already a fine knife. I just like Wharncliffes...

Image

Here I drew a line and scribed lightly

Image

I ground away with a diamond disk on my Dremel

Image

Ground down far enough

Image

Swedge drawn on roughly using a Cento 4 for a perfect model

Image

Swedge done (with same tool) and ready to file

Image

Done filing (used a fine file and a finer one)

Image

Next, sanded with 600 grit, then 1500, then rubbed with a piece of leather coated with polishing compound

Image

Almost done - resharpened to a thinner edge because that's what I like. Used a double sided Norton stone, steeled it, then stropped on leather with compound - very sharp - I test on paper and my knee hairs - you don't need to see that...

Image

Finished product

Image

That's it - I hope this maybe helps someone in the knife mod mood. I should also add that I don't like modding - I just love Wharncliffes and Spyderco, so...

- best wishes, Jazz.

P.S. A few more pics are in picture gallery...

Nice work! What is the advantage to the swedge if you don't mind me asking?

Thank you very much! I think the swedge makes tip penetration easier ... and kind of looks cool :)

Very nice!!! That motivates me to try something similar.

Thats sexy. People that do this should be paid by spyderco because it makes me want to buy this model and try it myself :D

Thanks y'all! Special thanks to Mr. Krein (an exceptional custom maker and grinder exraordinair - am I right people? an inspiration to makers and modders, among others) for the compliment. I really like this knife. It's very light - gorgeous yellow handle - H1 is awesome steel - the FRN handle is so nice - I love it! I might get a black one, too. I might add that it took me 3 hours and 10 minutes total to do this.

- best wishes, Jazz.

Looks great! Turning 'em into Wharnies is fun for me. I still need to try out the swedge on some of the ones I have done.

+1 I love it when someone shows step-by-step how they modified something. nice job and I really think it does look like something that could become a production piece

An old thread, but I just pulled the trigger on one of these and will also
turn it into a wharncliff as well, thanks for the memories :)

edited to add, I initially had the Pacific on order, but I like the handle
style of this one better, looks more secure to me ;)

Thanks for the memories. I wouldn't mind to see such thing put into production. ;)
