So I'm planning to bring one but I don't want to attract undue attention (or worse, loose it to the PTB). No particular uses, just want to have for EDC needs.

I have others I could choose from but these are the ones I'm mainly considering....

Destination, Hawaii.

I specifically choose these as loosing them to the flight or the cruise wouldn't KILL me. I'd miss them, of course but I'd recover. Not like loosing a Dodo or a Phoenix.

Go to walmart and get a $10 gerber? I would hate to have any of those confiscated.

I chose the Orange UKPK because of the orange g10 and the wireclip. I think the orange g10 is less menacing if someone sees it and the wireclip will not draw too much attention while carrying it around in pocket. The 2nd choice would be the Delica, then the Ladybug

Remember to put your knife in your bag to go through the Xray instead of walking through the metal detector when getting on and off the ship at ports. I did this on a cruise a 2 months ago in Alaska. I personally took a Caly3 CF ZDP, a little gutsy but never had any problem

Well, I've also got a bunch of non Spydies I could choose from... buying a new Gerber wouldn't be necessary. Maybe even an older carbon steel Opinel would be a good choice.... It's really kind of a fun little knife.

That's exactly the order I was thinking. My other main alternatives I didn't list were either a PE or SE Tasman.

My only thought on the Lava was clipping it only my key ring for boarding.... It doesn't even really look much like a knife and the SS handle would obscure the blade during a scan. And it's certainly below the 4" limit I've seen posted for NCL regs. (though those never look very "official".

Honestly, except for the Ladybug, I never carry any of these so like I said, losing them would be sad but not tragic.

Yeah, I thought about that. I think I'm gonna try to find one of my old "fanny packs" to take ashore and just put some other misc. stuff in (like sun screen, water and such)

If all fails and you are not able to get a knife on the ship order a steak dinner it will come with a steak knife and if some how that knife get lost during your dinner I'm sure nobody will make a big fuss. And I'm sure it will show up by the end of your cruise. 

They might suspect something is up when the crew notices a passenger walking around in swim shorts and a steak knife on a lanyard around his neck. Maybe not though...

That is what I did for a recent business trip. Bought a "Winchester" 3" linerlock from walmart. flicks easily open with a thumbstud. I felt a lot better about checking that cheapie into my checked luggage.

It's actually nice to have a cheapie lying around that you don't have to worry about abusing.

Salt 1 PE or SE, i just handled one yesterday and this is a fantastic travel knife, its also rust proof :D

Brave lad! I thought I remembered you chipping in on Tom's older cruise thread but I didn't recall the outcome of the discussion (if you posted it?).

Yeah I looked back on Tom's old cruise thread and I didn't report my experiences yet, thanks for the heads up. I was on Princess Cruises and never had an issue with throwing my Caly3 in the backpack that was to be xrayed. I tell you it was nice to have a Spydie on me while I was on shore at the very least.

I'm not sure I would take a Tazman simply because the blade shape does look mean and if they did find and question the blade then I would want to have something that looked like a talon. And as for the Lava I agree with you 100% on the small blade and shape and unconventional design, just the added weight and bigger metal signature of the SS handles might not fly, I dunno.

Have you given any thought to using the Lava as a money clip? Just a thought although it may not be one of my better ones. Other than that perhaps SAK such as the Climber or Soldier, but I would tend to favor the UKPK just because it works so well and should not raise too many alarms amongst the non-knife folk.

Ken- This sounds like a job for a Dragonfly. Non threatening, but it will handle what you are likely to need it for. An Urban would do well also, but is more expensive to risk losing.

Agreed, it would be a great choice. Unfortunately, one of the few regular offerings I don't currently have.

Still leaning toward the UKPK at this point.

I went on a cruise last year and had a Delica (D4) with me. I figured that it's a good, dependable knife and easily replaced if I lost it for some reason.

LOL i agree, but i think if i was going on a cruise i wouldnt bring any blade at all to avoid problems, its not worth getting something taken away and your car is so far away you cant easily just go put it back that you have to just say good bye

And that is the position I've taken in the past. Additionally, those were to foreign countries and I just wanted to avoid any possible misunderstandings there :D

But I keep reading about folks who took this knife or that one and everything was fine. The worst case I've read so far is the knife was confiscated but returned at the end of the cruise.

I certainly don't want to risk any of my favorites but the Orange UKPK is close enough to being a great EDC that it's really pulling out in front.

If you are going have a vacation around the sea, some Salt serie knife would be the best. I think you can forget the fix bladed ones. And the Tasman would be frightening because its aggressive bladeshape. I would go for the Pacific, but it is too big, non-knife people would be scared. Atlantic has blunt tip which is non-frightening, but it is also too big. I think the best would be the Salt 1 or the Saver Salt. I you don't hold by the Salts, some smaller non-collectible Spydie also can be useful. For example, Poliwog G10, Rescue 79mm, some kind of Delica4, "Pinky" Native, Dragonfly, Cricket, etc. Smaller Byrds can be good, too. Unfortunatelly you don't have really big choice, Medowlark, Robin, Finch, Wings, Medowlark Rescue. The Cara Cara, Flight, Catbyrd are too bigs.

I'm also going to cruising, but as a crew member. I think I will take with me a Salt 1, Saver Salt, Rescue 79mm or some kind of Dragonfly.

PS: Anyway I cannot understand the UK Penknife. Okay, I like the orange G10 handles and I also like the wire clip. These are good, and public friendly looking. But I cannot understand the whole concept. People won't look that it has a locking blade or not. Only the rules and law look it. People will see a spiky tip what is frightening, unlike a Rescue/Saver Salt which is friendly looking even for a very non-knife people. And they have safe locking blade. I think UK PK can make more serious harm than than a Saver Salt/Rescue, or even a Salt 1.

Rules and laws are very strange...

At least a 4" folder.
Never know what you will run into.
