Hello Everyone,

I had a Spyderco Delica in high school and loved it. I bought a replacement and now remember why I liked my old one so much. I have never collected pocket knives before and am on a budget (nothing over $300). I was wondering if anyone had advice on what to buy to start my collection.

I have seen the older Viele II on ebay and thought it would be a nice knife to have but the Lum folders all look really nice too. I'm not looking for something to carry or use. Just something beautiful to collect.

Any advice would be appreciated.

i would suggest the centafonte 3 with the palladium spyder on the handle

ive grown up with a Delica also and sofar im still carrying one, try the Delica4

Thanks RIOT. I actually have one coming in the mail. I think I owned a Delica 2 or 3 before it got stolen from my dorm.

Collect the Sages....

Two versions have been released.The first has a carbon fiber handle with a liner lock...the second has a titanium handle with a frame lock. New ones will be release periodically with different locks/handle materials to honor various lock designs and their creator.

You should be able to pick up both for under $300 with careful shopping.

As a collector's piece, you might want to consider one of the Kopas. They are "limited editions" with only 600 made of each version. So far, there have been 15 versions and, while several of the early ones have become hard to find, but most versions can be found on eBay and elsewhere. Some are more expensive than others, due to the material used for the scales, but none has had a "street price" over $200 and many are in the $125 area. The most recent was Squash Jigged Bone, the next will be Carbon Fiber.

Speaking of Carbon Fiber, another nice collectible Spyderco is the Kiwi, the current version of which uses CF scales.

That said, the Viele II is also a handsome little gentleman's folder and would be an excellent choice.

Just because the Cult of the Curved Ones needs to be represented here, may I suggest a Harpy or Tasman Salt? Or, when it comes out, the new H1 Spyderhawk :D

I collect a few lines now :)

Started off doing the Natives and managed to get pretty much all of them then decided to give them away in favour of others (pity I had to sell them but couldn'tafford to keep them and buy new ones). Currently my colletion consists of a fair few knives but as far as pure collectors pieces go I have Persians & Kopas, with many others with a few variations uncompleted. Kopas are my favourite for collection but they are quite expensive and with about 12 or so already released and at least that amount again being released in the future it could be an expensive exercise. They are very nice though :D :p

I agree with Daniel and The Deacon on the Kopa recommendation, with a word of caution. They're totally addictive! :D You start out by thinking, "O, that looks nice, I'll just get that one...and maybe one other." And then, boom, before you know it, you're asking Sal to never stop making them or thinking how cool it would be to get an Evrina so you can get it scrimshawed. Okay, well, maybe that's just me, but they really are amazing little knives, in so many ways. :)

Geez, you guys are going to have him collecting the entire catalog soon :D


Might I ask what abouts are you looking for in your collection? Are you looking to buy to resell eventually? Are you looking to use the knives and enjoy the different designs? Are you looking to find a particular knife or series and try to collect all of them?

Of course, I'll have to throw in the cricket suggestion, There's enough models made to make collecting them a challenge, but they're somewhat cheap, extremely useful, and nearly as non-scary as it gets for a non-knife person.

Cobrajoe: I really like the shape of the blades and some of the models like the Lum Chinese folder and tanto are just beautiful.

I may eventually resell my collection but it is mostly just for me. I took Aikido for years in high school and really like the fact that so many of the high quality Spyderco folders are from Japan and have a sort of martial feel to them.

I can't believe that nobody mentioned the so very elegant (and well made) Volpe! While not made anymore, it's still available at reasonable prices.

Also I love Kopas and Vieles (but original C42 Viele I love much more than Viele2)

Volpe is must have, without doubt.

I would like to add:
Caly3, UKPK, Lums, Shabaria, Worker. Also Adventura and Lava, designed by Forum members.
I think this list can keep you busy and broke for couple years :D :D

I think the Sages are a good idea. Especially since they have only recently hit production.
