Millie Lost at Sea

#1

Post by telemeister »

Hi Guys,

Just thought I would share a story with you about how I lost my beloved SE Military at sea.

I was on a boat in a convoy of 3 in a pretty fast moving river, close to the heads. Another boat got into trouble and we went to assist, taking them under tow. Unfortunately our engine decided that it would be a good time to stop working, and we started drifting out towards the ocean. I then had to cut the line with my Millie (which I don't normally take on water - I was away from home and it was all I had). The Millie had no problems cutting the rope at all, I might add.

We then tried to use the anchor as a grappling device against the rocks. When that didn't work, I cut the short rope that was attached to the bucket and tied a long one on it to create an improvised sea anchor/drogue. We then started using the paddles and flow of the water (thank God for my Swiftwater training!) to move the boat to the breakwater. We managed to wedge the boat into the rocks (after the longest paddle of my life) and climb to safety. The boat was then swamped and, sadly, my Millie was lost along with one of my Surefires.

The Millie was one of my favourite knives, and the one I used the most. It had served me well. That night a couple of other people had knives that failed them and when I debriefed them I convinced more than a few about the need to carry a good knife - when I was asked what kind, I told them 'Spyderco'.

While I don't have a Millie (for some reason, I just can't seem to want one), the loss of ANY Spydie is always a sad event! Sorry for your loss.

Mate that sucks :(

I grieve for you. I have lost my Millie, but not forever (I think I just misplaced her !)

Was that your only Millie and if so is she going to be replaced?

That's too bad. I'm sorry for your loss. At least it went out fighting.

On a lighter note, I wonder if some fish is thinking, "Wow, this thing is hard to digest!" :D

She went baring her teeth in an all out fight it sounds like. It saddens me to hear of anyone losing a Spydie of any kind, but especially one of my favorites, the Military. Good luck to you and your new companion when she gets to you!

Ditto on Poseidon's new keychain knife!! :D

Your Military served you well during a moment of need, and an extreme one at that. Remember it well as you look upon your new one.

It always bums me out reading "lost Spydie" stories :( . I'd bet there are hundreds, if not thousands of lost Spydies out there in the world.
