Please Save My Blades!!!!!!!

Post by Sweetness34 »

So, I bought 3 matriarchs and 2 delicas in a lot on ebay the other day for $68 with shipping  But, they came and here is what they look like. Both Delicas have broken tips and the matriarchs have been poorly sharpened. I was wondering if any one knows if I can send any of these to Spyderco to get sharpened. The seller described them as "used but most look to have been resharpened at one time or another."

I think they can,but that looks like they would charge the $20 dollar charge for putting a tip back on them.Read the Info on the warranty page. :)

Beaten up as **** For that money you could buy a NIB folder! ;)
Spyderco CAN sharpen them, but will it be worth?

From the information provided by Spyderco on this website:

For the following repairs, please include $20.00 plus $5.00 shipping and handling:

Blade or Edge -- broken tip from prying or dropping, destroyed edge due to improper sharpening, loose blade from abuse, rust due to neglect or other blade issues. (Spyderco is unable to replace blades)

Just crazy old me, but I see that as a $68 opportunity to get your own sharpening skills down pat. Those teeth need so much dentistry that you could really get some experiance on.
The job can not be botched any more than it is & once you correct the job yourself your confidence will leap forward.
Get the gear & go for for it.

Yikes! I know Spyderco can sharpen them and do an amazing job as best they can but as far as restoring missing teeth, tip of blade, etc. I'm not sure on that one. I guess what I'm trying to say is that after they work their magic, you will have a nice set of hard-user knives.

I hate to be the one to say it, but you got robbed. By the time Spyderco grinds those Matriarchs back far enough to have an edge and point, they'll be Harpies with oversize handles. The SE Delica might be salvageable, the CE is toast. You could send them all in with a check for $100, but don't expect to be thrilled with what that C-note buys. Those things are so far gone it would take a miracle to revive them.

This is unfortunate. I was watching auction too, but it got a bit pricy. I thought it might be fun to bring some life back to these knives. I agree that the best thing might be to try to reprofile these yourself. They will never be like new, but you can make them serviceable.

I just bought a used Endura from pawn shop which had some broken SE teeth. I used a combination of the Byrd Duckfoot, Spyderco Profile stones and the Sharpmaker. It worked out quite nice. It will take a long time, so I suggest patience.

I have gotten stung a few times on ebay but not this badly. Sometimes it pays to back off when something seems too good to be true.

Personally, I'd love one of those Matriarchs... I've always wanted a larger reverse S that could be used as a user :D

I'm sure a good sharpening would get them to be awesome users. :D

that's roughly $14 per knife, not a terrible price if you're planning to put them to work. If the Matriarchs had a bit more tip left, I'd consider it a pretty good deal.

Unless you were hoping to restore and re-sell these. In which case you're probably not going to break even. (certainly not if you can't do the work yourself.) :(

I don't think you got robbed too bad. I too wouldn't mind owning either of those matriarchs and investing the time to revive them or finding someone who can do it for you. you wil have two one of a kind spyderco folders and if you tune them up yourself they wil have a nice back story and a little of "you" in them. :) don't give up on them yet.

I'd say they've all got some life in them yet, but as Jim said, you'll need some major patience. It can't hurt to give it a try. :)

Sounds like there may be some interest if you want to try to sell them on eBay or on another forum. Sell three and send two into Spyderco for regrinding with a check for $45.00 (two $20.00 serration regrinds and one $5.00 return shipping). Hopefully between your sales and expense you will have very little extra invested and some pretty cool knives back in your pocket. Just my thoughts, please do what you think is best.

On a side note, I viewed your public profile to see where (Country, State, Province, Region) you live. Not much info there.

Best wishes,

Doug

If Spyderco was "OK" with it I would send in the 3 Matriarchs + the SE Delica. The CE Delica looks like it's junk (the way the lockback button is sticking up. Even though they look horrible now, I bet you'd be surprised at how good of a job Spyderco does on a knife that has NOT been taken care of. I wouldn't expect them to be perfect especially since some are missing teeth etc. I bet even if you sent one of them to Spyderco you'd be impressed. At least they would be dang sharp again. :)

Wow,

A sad end for three nice knives. What you got was the Spyderco version of a Porsche hitting a brick wall doing 120 miles an hour.
