spyderco meerkat

Post by pookiechad »

So who has one and what do you think about it, it seems that every spydie I end up wanting is a hard to find model, I want a yojimbo, trailing point lil temperance and a meerkat, when I couldn't afford to buy these knives they were all available, now I'm out of college and can afford the knives I want, I can't find them, but I might end up winning a yojimbo on ebay, so maybe one down and 2 to go

I think the meerkat is one of the coolest knives spyderco has put out. The only downside I see is the weight of the knife for being small I think the meerkat is pretty heavy.

Delica and Endura are great knives! They're the low priced crack samples that'll get you hooked on spyderco! Feed the need!

I see where you are coming from, as I was sort-of in the same boat as you. My Spyderco addiction started long after many of today's favorites were discontinued. I would come here to the forums and many of the members who have been collecting for 10-20 years would say things such as "you just have to know where to look" or "be patient, you'll find it" or "half of the fun is in the hunt for the knife you want". Now at that time, I have to be honest and admit that it would aggravate me to no end when I would hear that. But now, looking back I see that they were right. I thought I would never, ever find some of the knives that I have in my collection today. Now I will tell you what was told to me in the past, patience pays off, don't give up and keep your eyes open. :)

I have one of the original CC numbered 440C made in Golden versions. I'm still watching for a "normal" one to use.

I have two. :) I'd barely even heard of Spyderco when these were in production, let alone heard of the Meerkat. One is a bog standard PE, the other a Reverse S. I'm not fussed by the Reverse S but I did want one example of it in my collection. I was pretty disinterested but can acknowledge why many will like Reverse S. However, the fact it's a Meerkat is a bonus for me. ;)
I was lucky enough to get them in the last year at a highish but not unreasonable price. The prices seem to be going through the roof now.

Nice size, excellent ergos, handicapped by a gimmick which, in addition to causing Spyderco to label it a "novelty knife", increased the weight and turned an otherwise full ambi lock into a handed one.

If Spyderco ever does a Meerkat II, I hope they ditch the gimmick and just build it as a normal mid-lock.

Without the gimmick is it not just a Navigator?
I like the gimmick, without it it's just another small knife! ;) :D

I really like the lock on the Meerkat - it was not being able to open it that led me to discover the Spyderco website.

A great knife, and an excellent example of a high performing LBK!

I have a SE Meerkat and I love it. It fits my hand well and the blade shape is very useful, but I have noticed some things about the knife that caused it to be removed from my EDC rotation. First off, the knife can only be carried tip down. Second, the combination of smooth handle scales and metal clip makes the knife somewhat difficult to retain in the pocket. Like I said I love my Meerkat and I just don't want to lose the knife, but I think that anyone who has never had one should try one, if they can.

OK, I had to reply to this-the Meerkat is quite possibly my favorite Spyderco. I bought it (in a clamshell, no less), got home, couldn't figure out the lock, & called them in Golden, CO & was on the phone for a ridiculous amount of time-it's really hard to explain this lock over the phone to someone!

It's the perfect sized knife for me-it was my EDC for quite some time, then I almost lost it a few times, got nervous, & switched to a BladeTech Wegner Mouse-not nearly the knife that the Meerkat is (but I won't be gutted, if I lose it). I still keep it handy around the house, love my Meerkat, can't believe how lucky I was to find this at a local store (military home & garden)-I can't believe they've stopped carrying Spydercos, now they have just CRKT & Benchmade...

I have to agree that this is a great little knife! I searched for about a year to get my hands on one of these with no luck. After I stopped actively searching the internet for one, I went to a local knife show and lucked out. One vendor had 4 SE Meerkats! I bought two of them (at a good price I might add) so I could have one for the case and one to carry.

One thing I'm surprised no one mentioned about this knife is the deep pocket clip. This is the only spyderco I know of where the clip allows the knife to sit entirely in the pocket. This is a great feature and I only wish more of my spyderco's had such a deep clip. Good luck with your search!

I have an SE recurve version. I second the comments above, but I'll add that I wish it was a bit flatter.

It is a nice knife. I used to have Golden version, but couldn't resist the trade, which I was offered.
If Spyderco will make a sprint I would be happy buy PE.

The Meerkat is a cute little knife and it's always fun to let your NKP friends try to close it :D

Depending on what blade config you have, it is one **** of a box opener... and it feels just right in the hand to boot. If you wait long enough, you will evetually get one. Always keep an eye open at http://www.knife-bst.com and you will hunt one down some day.

And as any thread is worthless without pics...:

I have several of the variations made. It is great. I cannot carry Milli or Para b/c work environment. The Meerkat is perfect. I have read about complaints with vertical blade play but EDC'ed a drop point daily and have never had any issues. Leftys hate it b/c of th locking mechanism. I'm a righty and it works for me. I think it is a must have. I hope in the future we see a remake.

+1.
I'd love to get a low ride clip like this for every Spyderco I own. I'd start with my Salsas
