Overzealous factory sharpening?

#1

Post by Fred Sanford »

So, what do you think?

Send 'er in or not worry about it? To me it seems they took a bit much off right at the tang. I kinda wanna send it in, but part of me says "who cares just use it".

I should also state that out of the 4 Mili's that I own (this being the 5th), the others don't look like that. I've always had awesome quality control from Spyderco.

Thanks. :)

I am having trouble understanding what the problem is. Do you have any close-ups of another Military to make it clearer?

Doesn't look bad at all. I would just use it.

On my other Military's the edge starts where this green arrow is.

So basically on this one it would seem that someone sharpened it a bit too far up the blade.

This knife will be a user. I didn't have a black bladed PE Military so I wanted one for a user. I kinda broke my "no knives in 2009" with this one. It's brand new in the box.

Also, in the first photo where the knife is butted up against the cardboard, you can see a gap between the edge and the cardboard. If I do this to any of my other Mili's there is no gap.

Ugh, I hate that too. It puts kind of a "recurve" toward the back of the blade. I just got a brand new ZDP Endura, and I think I've been on it for 9 hours at least. I've finally gotten that recurve out; now I'm finishing it up lol

I dunno, I might send that one in.

Thanks folks. I will probably send it in....seeing is that if I am going to get a knife brand new I would rather be the one that sharpens the steel away myself during it's lifetime. :)

I wouldn't worry about it. But no one can blame you for sending it in. It's obviously off by a bit

It doesn't look right, but it depends on you if it should be sent in. They'd probably just regrind it anyway.

Personally, it might actually bug me enough to send it in, but then again, I reluctant to send anything in. Heck, I still have a bad Caly Jr. grey that I should have sent in years ago for a bad lock.

Something else I just noticed is that the amount of steel above the hole is less than all my other Milies.

That's weird.

David if it bothers you every time you look at the knife I would send it in. It would bother me. Just my 2 cents.

David, these things are sharpened by hand and there's obviously some hand finishing involved with the rest of the blade as well. If I lay twenty of my Kiwis side by side, I can see minor variations in the bevel, the hollow grind, the shape of the wharncliffe "nose", the distance from the bolster to the "brow", and the amount of metal above the Spyderhole. I have no problem with that. I think expecting machine like consistency on a hand finished item is unrealistic.

Your Military's blade looks well finished. The grinds on both sides are well matched in both height and length. Without comparing it to another knife few people, if any, would see anything that could be remotely classified as "wrong" with it.

Aloha David,

Bro, if ya posted about it, it bugs you!!!

Funny though, I noticed the amount of steel over the RoundHole before I noticed the edge thingy you are talking about! :o

I have a SS SE Caly' Jr. that was re-sharpened at the factory, and it has that "look" also...IIRC.

Me, I would just use it...but I would keep noticing "it".

God bless you and yours and take care!

I would not bother:
Blade: if it should not be borne that whay it will become so after first sharpening, it's only a matter of time and use.
Hole: the amount is far henaught for the duty it is suppose to perform: opening. I am shure it will last more than your thumber thingher :) .

But, please consider I am not a spydie talebano collector. I like and use all sort of knifes, prererably hand made over industrial, and not a fan of absolutely perfect-fabric-defect-proof-sterilized ones. So I would look at the point that are threathening You as a peculiartity that mae proove there is a man at work in the factory's lines. Personal poin of view.

This part on my Mili almost looks like yours. Sending it in would never be an option for me, cause I'd miss it so much (I only have one Mili!!).
I kinda broke my "no knives in 2009" with this one.
Were you serious with that one? No new knives in a whole year?? That would be one of my worst nightmares, so I'm glad you "failed". ;)

Take care,

David....it seems I have the same problem with my black Millie. My grind starts at the back, but there is a noticable gap when placed on a flat surface. I'd keep the knife for a user, or just sell it and pick up another one.
