I am knew to Spyderco collecting and I am sure this has been discussed prior to my arrival on the forum, but can anyone tell me why my Mini Manix box is labeled Manix 80mm when the Spyderco website indicates the model known as the Mini Manix is actually 83mm? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Also let me know if you have a preference for the CE or PE in this model? Thanks

I think they already had 10,000 box labels printed with 80mm to indicate it wasn't the 95mm when someone measured one and pointed out that it really wasn't 80mm, but rather 83mm.

When they leave the factory they are only 80mm, however when the buyer gets them, the Manix is so happy to see them that they swell to 83mm. :eek:

Simple - its perfectly aligned with spyderco's philosophy of "underpromise, overdeliver"

Can't see this being a problem for anyone. Either way the knife is over 3" and under 3.5". As far as I know, at least here in the USA, there are no jurisdictions where 80mm would be legal and 83mm would not. If it were 80mm and labeled as 76mm, that would be a different story.

As for the "why", I like Zen's answer best, but think yablanowitz's is probably closer to the mark. IIRC, it was originally going to be 80 then someone at Spyderco, quite possibly Eric himself, realized the blade could be a hair longer. The model name was, after all, only a name, and since folks normally don't complain about getting more than advertised, they may have felt it not worthwhile to scrap labels and catalogs which had already been printed up.

In Hungary it matters! We use metric system, so the limit is "not longer than 80mm"

So you are allowed to carry the box but not the knife...

I know it's an old thread but actual for me.

I am also in Hungary and just have bought a Mini Manix assuming that it is legal size to carry and now I have been informed that it isn't.

I will take the risk and continue to EDC it because it is so awsome although it would be more convenient to know that could be no problem.

Grind off that "not alowed" 3mm of the blade and You would be legal :P

At least on the current site it's listed discontinued as a "Spyderco Manix 83mm".

If it makes you feel better even if it was 80mm it would be illegal by .049 inches or just over a millimeter.

Why, if 80mm is the limit here?

Anyway, if a cop will ever ask me about my knife I hope he will not make any fuss for only a few millimeters... :rolleyes:

Just saw this on Wikipedia:

Carrying a knife with blade length over 8 centimetres (3.1*in) is prohibited in public places in Hungary unless justified by sport, work or everyday activity. Automatic Knives, throwing stars and "French knives" are prohibited regardless of blade length and may be sold only to members of the army, law enforcement and the national security agency. Violation may be punished with a fine up to 50000 HUF. Possession at home and transportation in secure wrapping is allowed for everyone.

The conversion got a bit confusing on another site saying "over 3.1 inches" as 80mm is 3.149". It makes sense the metric system is the basis for carry law instead, lol. I would just document how many places say its a 80mm model and claim being naive.
