It every annoy you at a restaurant you order a steak or other meat that requires more than a butter knife to cut, and they give you a crappy generic steak knife that has a hard time cutting warm butter when you have a razor sharp :spyder: in your pocket.

I can't count how many restaurant meals I've cut up with a pocket knife. I think the most memorable was a Christmas party where my BM 640 Mini-Spike ended up making the rounds and cutting all the steaks on the table. :D

I call the waiter/waitress over and ask that they take the steak knife back to the chef and tell him that either the steak needs to be more tender or the knives need sharpened. Then I usually take out a Spyderco Military and get stuff done.

I don't care what people think. If they don't like me cutting my steak with a Military or a fully serrated Spydie.....they can go pound salt.

Can't remember the last time I ordered steak when eating out. It's one of those things I'm conceited enough to think I cook better than anyone. :D And, I have to admit, I generally don't mind the chance to put one of my Spydercos to use. However, just as a matter of principle, it is annoying not to be given a decent knife when you've paid good money for food that requires one.

The only part that bothers me about using my Spydie is that there's often no good way to clean it afterward, without grossing out one's fellow diners.

Grossing out the fellow diners is half the fun! :D

I usually dunk mine in my water glass and wipe it off with my napkin.

I agree that it is annoying when the provided knife won't cut the provided steak, but considering the number of idiots and lawyers in this country I'm surprised restaurants provide anything more dangerous than a rubber spoon.

True but not always wise if one of them is your boss. :D For the record, I usually clean mine the other way around. Pour a bit of water out of my glass onto the napkin, then use it to wipe the blade.

You do have a point about lawyers, between the idiots who are really too dumb to use sharp implements and the hustlers who'll cut themselves just so they can sue, there is probably an element of self defense on the part of the owners involved.

Has anyone been to an Outback steakhouse ? They have those big ole honking knives, the one I got looked like it had been smoothed over with a belt sander, all the serrations were gone, I found it kind of funny. So I preceded to finish the meal with my SAK ( pre :spyder: knowledge ) The manager was making his rounds to the tables and saw me working the Soldier Alox pretty well and asked with a startled look in his eye " Is the steak so tuff that you had to resort to another knife ? " I started to BULLSHIT him but could not keep a straight face :D I showed him the knife that I was supposed to use, he quickly gathered it up and sent us free desert, all in all a good dinner.

Gentlemen, where in the world are you dining that a medium-rare steak doesn't melt when touched by a fork or where they fail to provide adequate steak ware?

I've only found one place here in the city that does a decent steak to order. You ask for a medum, you get a medium. Greek place, where you end up spending close to $30 for a steak dinner but you sure don't leave hungry.

Been to a few places here that I've sent my steak back... order a medium and get a piece of shoe leather. I like my steaks just past the point of having pink potatoes, not having to get a chainsaw out to get through it.

The last place to try here still is Montanas, so we'll see about that still.

As far as having to use your own knife, I always have. Even though thier butterknife will get through it, I like to slice my food not saw away at it.

At my favorite place, all you would need is a butter knife. (Cool River, Austin)

Nope. I carry a sharpener, too. ;)

Dulled edges are part of life. You can either have them or fix them. If you want to avoid them, don't use your knife. If you aren't going to use it, why carry it? :D

I'm not worried about dullng from regular cutting job, but I've hit ceramic plate accidentally before and that instantly flatterned the edge, so now I avoid ceramic plate as much as I can.

I've hit lots of things that flattened the edge instantly, and more than a few that chipped the edge. I try to avoid such things as much as I can, but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. ;)
