Im in the market for a new spydie, what is the best all rounder? I do have an ifinity toward the harpy as a buddy has one, any suggestions.

The best all around Spydie, and my personal favorite, is the Wegner. This knife rocks! One of the most versatile and comfortable folders around. Period.

I´d say that it depends on, what size you prefer. A large one: Military, a small: Calypso Jr Lightweight

It'll be hard for anything to ever replace the Wegner, IMHO.

Except for a Wegner with a bigger opening hole, VG-10 steel, and an eccentric pivot <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

If your looking for big and bold with all the dependability you could ever need Military is definetly the way to go.Now if your looking for a self defense model I strongly suggest the g-10 civilian,I wouldn't even hesitate.But if an eveyday general purpose carrier is what your after,then definetly invest in the native,I have both models and highly suggest either stainless or the frn model(serrated of course)Enjoy,before long you'll be hooked and you'll buy them all.Just in which order is up to you

Wegner, Military, Calypso all around LARGE (> 3 inch). These three give a choice of steel - Wegner ATS34, Military CPM440V, Calypso VG10. ALL great steels.
Native, Calypso Jr. all around MEDIUM / SMALL (< / = 3 inch). Steels: Native 440V, Calypso Jr. in ATS55. Again, BOTH GREAT steels
Harpy is good but limited usage (because of blade shape) might preclude it from the"Best All Around" lists above.

Police / Rookie - Large / Small two knife COMBO is a favorite of mine.
You also might give some thought about serrated or not, or a 50/50, 40/60 blade based on your needs

I agree with the above, they are all great knives, but how about the Dyad and Dyad Jr? They save having to carry two knives around.

Chinook, no doubt. It's solid, strong, good steel, excellent grip,no liner lock.

I received mine today an can say it's a "folding fixed blade".

I rate it above the Wegner as "all round" because it can do all the Wegner can and has a better lock. The Wegners I have seen (and I had two)did not inspire confidence in the lock department- on mine the liner lock moved rather quickly over to the opposite side of the tang with repeated openings.(the liner lock on the Military is imo much much better than that on the Wegner).

Arrgh! I can't take it any longer! I must post the Native list!!!

Reasons for picking this Native (once again spreading the Native gospel!):

1) Blade is 3 1/8", which is within legal-limit in most places (alright it's not 3", but difference is negligible). This assures you have the biggest you can get, but not too big.

2) Perfect balance between tactical and utility purposes. Blade is spear-point, hollow ground, which is great for thrusting and slashing techniques. Also great to cut a myriad of stuff.

3) CPM440V blade and comfortable FRN handle for only $43!!! (www.discountknives.com) You get the best of both worlds: premium-quality steel for unbealievably low price.

4) Handle is comfortable with at least two grip positions. Grip long by putting index finger and middle finger in extended handle choil, or short by putting index finger in natural steel choil (located just below the edge) and middle finger in handle choil. Gives you great cutting, stabbing and slashing control. Also it features a web-pattern to eliminate slippery conditions.

5) Spydie hole assures easy opening and closing of blade. It is bar-none the best system to open a knife, beating the thumb stud and disk IMNSHO. It is also excellent for doing the "drop opening" technique.

6) Tip-up carry great for drawing at lightning speed, plus handle does not stick out in a "threatening" position, IMHO.

7) Knife is very lightweight. Great for carrying clipped in shorts or jeans.

You CANNOT go wrong with the Native!!!

Opinions are like a... bah, nevermind

For a small knife, nothing beats the Calypso Jr., either in micarta or lightweight.

For a larger knife, my theoretical favorite is the Wegner. I say "theoretical" because as much as I like the design, the handle fits my hand very badly, so it's not a good choice for me. The Terzuola folder fits my hand much better. I'm not a fan of the Military -- the thinness of the handle feels weird in my hand, plus that handle is loooooong and uncomfortable in my pocket. Obviously, if the Military or Wegner handles fit your hand perfectly, you might be better off with one of those.

But the real answer, I feel, is to forget liner locks and go with a compression lock. I haven't handled one yet, but the Vesuvius looks like it might be the first knife that might make me think twice about picking up my current big general-use fave folder.

I'm a big Native fan but the Delica deserves vote as a great all around knife.

In my humble opinion, it would have to be the Military. Simply because it has the body and the "cut-ability" to handle any situation.

It is big enough to do a real man's job and not small enough to come up short in unexpected circumstance.

It "breathes" dependability, oozes authenticity, whips out like a bullwhip and slashes like a zillion volts of lightning. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Best all round in my opinion is metal handle mariner, have 2, always carry 1
