Stainless Steel Native - Too Heavy for EDC?

#1

Post by sharkattack »

Hey guys,

I've been absent for a while, but still browsed from time to time. It's time to buy myself a Christmas present and I'm really leaning towards the Native in SS. Is this too heavy to use as an EDC? I only handled one once before, and if I recall, it seemed like it had a nice heft to it, but not so much to deter one from carrying it. With jeans on, I can tolerate a heavier EDC, but with work pants (Dockers) I don't want something that's going to be yanking my pockets down.

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.

S.
My collection so far: Delica SS PE, Delica 4 FRN PE, Endura FRN SE, Manix 2 G10 PE. Since I've officially been bitten by the bug, the collection is sure to grow... :)

I EDC a Mariner H1 since I got it, and all I can say is it isn't too heavy for me at all (on my Jeans, that is!) Work pants should be fine with it as well, but on my "Armani trousers" ( ;) ), I do prefer a lightweight Spydie like the UKPK.

The SS Native is 131g, and my H1 Mariner is 138g, so I assume you will be fine.

.....at least if you do like a little heft :D

I guess it comes down to personal taste. If you like slim and smooth handles with a little weight, than SS is perfect for you.

I often carry 4-5 knives, and usually I can't tell any weight difference between SS and G-10 and FRN. Granted, I'm wearing carpenter pants, but SS handles aren't too much heavier than their G-10 counterparts.

I carry one and it feels fine to me. But, I like to know I have a knife in my pocket. I had a para for awhile and I kept grabbing my pocket to make sure it was there. Those knives sure are light weight for the size.

Most of the knives in your sig line are lightweights. You may feel that the stainless is weighing you down in Dockers. Think about a UKPK, or a Caly 3, or a Sage.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

I often carry a C83 Persian, which is a good 15 grams heavier than the Native II. Yet, if asked, I'd say the Persian feels like a feather in my hand, while the Native II feels like a brick. Point being, the perception of weight is a very subjective thing. If you really like a knife, you will carry it and it will feel fine.

Hey I'm just curious as to whether or not they still make the stainless handled Native model with AUS-10 blade steel?

What limited use I've had with the steel it seemed to be an above average blade steel.

I'm also wondering if that knife is available in plain edge?

To amplify a bit, the PE Native II was discontinued about four years ago. They are extremely hard to find, although there was a point a year or so ago when someone must have found a small cache of them. The CE version was dropped last year, but had been changed from AUS-10 to VG-10 the year before.

Both are discontinued, but the PE variant is a really rare animal and not easy to find - and then for top dollar.

As a collerctor's piece, it would be cool. As a user, I'd prefer a FRN then and keep a possible PE SS Native pristine :)

A plain edge Native II was the knife that introduced me to Spyderco. I still have it and carry it on occasion. It's not to heavy for EDC, in my opinion.

Paul is alluding to a mini-hoard of PE Native IIs that turned up about a year of so ago. My only regret is not buying more of them at the time, but as always, hindsight is 20/20.

Combo-edged Native IIs with both AUS-10 and VG-10 blade steels are still somewhat available. However, with the discontinuance of the model in recent times, I expect that there is a day soon coming when they'll be tough to find.

I have the native with the frn handle and i love it. I envy the state you live in because it`s a very knife friendly state because of there loose knife laws.

I was thinking, "You envy Nebraska?" Then I remembered that CoPilot has moved :o

I gues Ne isn't bad though, but we do have a 3.5 inch limit on blade length.
