after cutting up only one cardboard box my older model military, the one with 2 screws in the clip but in cpm 440v, looses its hairshaving ability. i find this somewhat annoying. are the older models of lower hrc

Sounds like a sharpening problem. If you have access to one, sharpen it on a 204. Using the 20 degree angle and Step 3 (corners of white stones) will bring a shaving edge which will endure for a very long time.

What type of cardboard is the box? Dulling after slicing up a single-wall corrugated isn't normal, but after double-wall would be expected.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

I cut up a double layered cardboard box with my older ATS 34 (less carbon than CPM 440V)Military just yesterday, and it could still shave afterwards. Must be a sharpening problem.

Beach Bum,

At what angle do you sharpen your ATS-34 Millie? 30 or 40 degrees? Do you usually go to stage four (flats of the white stones)? I'm assuming the use of a "Sharpmaker" system here...

I own two of these knives, both plain edge and toothy, that's why I ask.

Thanks, Jeff/1911.

Jeff1911, I sharpen my knives with the rods from the Spyderco Triangle system, and as a finisher, a barber belt with honing compound. However, I do not use the Triangle system- I pin the knife on the edge of the table and take the rod in hand. It doesn't sound very precise way to maintain an angle, but with extensive practice, it is very consistent. I prefer a much narrower angle, about 20 degrees, over a 30 degree angle, and 40 – I would not even think of it. Gerber uses a 30 degree angle and I find it does not cut as well, and it is difficult to get the razor edge that I want with a 30 degree angle. Needless to say, the first thing I did when I bought my Spectre was to change the angle.

Don't forget that it is easier to create a wire edge, intentionally or unintentionally, on CPM 440 as it is tempered to about five degrees softer on the Rockwell scale, than most Spyderco offerings.

Knife Knut on a shoestring budget.

thanks for all the response to my question,i sharpen my military on a fine white triangular rod from spyderco and i sharpen it on "feel" alone,i try to slice a small piece off of the rod.
i will keep on testing
by the way, because i own a little knife shop
in holland,i have access to more than just one knife and after the problems with the military i tried a calypso jr. in vg10 on the same cardboard, and afterwards i could still shave with it (fine small knife by the way) greetings from the man from tulipland.

just another question guys;what is a good way to remove a wire edge.
i've been sharpening my millie tonight and i just can't seem to lose it and i hate that
i think it was knifeknut who brought up the possibility of this wire edge and i think this is indeed the problem
thanks for the help and hope to be of service to you one of these days.
