Agree on Shabaria. Will add the Dodo in there.

We've all looked at Spyderco's for too long and so they all start to look 'normal' :p

Jot Khalsa, Shabaria, and Dodo are on my list as well.
I am lucky to buy Blue and Black PE Dodos shortly after they were discontinued, so they didn't cost me arms and legs. I was lucky to buy Khalsa PE on the knife show at reasonable price and I hope that one day I would be able to get Shabaria PE, one day.........

I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.

Definitely the Dodo and the P'kal :spyder:

"Strange" Spydies

#11

Post by KaliGman »

There are no "unusual" Spydies, only great knives that are not appreciated by the puerile, teeming masses of uneducated consumers :p . Just kidding!

Not much beyond "mall ninja" cutlery seems strange to me nowadays, but, trying to look at it from an "average knife user" standpoint, I would say my favorite "unusual" looking Spydercos are: Gunting, Spyderwrench, Ronin, SPOT, and ATR (when I first saw it, I thought it looked like a folder that the Predator should have pulled on Arnold in the climatic fight scene). Honorable mention goes to the Karambit (kind of an "industrial design" take on the traditional Indonesian blade),

I failed to mention the Civilian. It is unusual looking enough that it should be on the list. However, the question also included "favorite," and I do not now, nor have I ever, really liked that knife. The same can be said for the P'kal. I also failed to mention the Kris. After so many years in the Filipino arts, the Kris does not look strange to me. More importantly, this knife is designed by Ed Schempp, which means it is not strange, but, like all Schempp designs, is a veritable archetype of ergonomics and knife design that should be studied by mechanical engineers, industrial designers, and anyone who wants to know how and why a particular design element works on a knife :) . To the average person, the Kris is strange looking. I say that it functions beautifully and is an incredible design.

Q,R, S, Dodo, Lil Temp Rhino, Worker ( Yes, I said it) It was unusual looking when it came out and didn't look at all like a "knife" should look. It was probably the first real knife I saw that put function and ergonomics before traditional looks. It really set Spyderco apart. Joe

I am pretty boring and stuck-in-a-rut with the Spydercos I choose. The Delica/Salt I and Endura/Pacific are my usual knives, with the Tasman being a much-used, always-carried, special-use knife for me.

So pretty much any other Spyderco would seem strange in my pockets on a daily basis.

Nonetheless, I'll give three of my favorites:

Ayoob (Please bring it back with maroon FRN or with carbon fiber.)
Civilian (How about making it with FRN.)
Kumo (Please bring it back, maybe with FRN scales if the sharkskin epoxy cord-wrap is too much for production and maybe H1 steel.)

{I'd buy any of the above iterations with H1 or ZDP. I'd love some tan FRN.}

But I don't really consider "unusual" because they are pretty common in other cultures. :)
