what is the best way to clean the stones?

The two favored methods are a damp sponge with one or another type of powdered cleanser and erasers. For the first, Barkeepers Friend seems to be the most highly regarded, but Comet works too.

I take a 3M scouring pad (a.k.a. a Greenie pad), wet it, sprinkle on Bar Keepers Friend until a paste is formed, then scrub the rods briskly. Rinse and repeat if needed, which it seldom is.

I do this exact same thing. I found that it helps a ton to have new green scouring pads. Those white sharpening rods really shine!! (well not really shine, but they are super-white!).

How would you go about cleaning the diamond rods?
Or is that possible.

I just spray my diamond rods with water when I am using them and this works fine for me. Besides using the stones wet I do not clean them.

I too get excellent results with a (yellow and) green scouring pad with a powder cleanser. I just rinse with warm water, scrub with the powder stuff and rinse again with warm water, dry with a towel and they're good to go again.
