What type of steel, edge/grind is used for old school straight blade razors?
Anyone ever dare to shave your face with a :spyder: ?
Steel question..

Not sure what old straight razors are made from.
And yes, I've shaved my arms, and also parts of my face to see if I could do it with a Spydie. I have shaved parts of my face with a Delica 3, Delica 4, Military, Centofante 3, Dragonfly, and probably a few others. I didn't use any shaving cream but I would imagine that it would be a bit more rough of a shave than using my Mach III. I just did it because I could.

I have (dry) shaved with my Para on a few occasions. First time I took it out of the box I shaved a bit with it. It was my first good Spydie and I needed to see how sharp it was  Just a couple weeks ago I was on a canoe trip and I decided to shave with it on the 2nd day. More than anything just to see peoples reactions. "What are you doing?" "Shaving." "With a knife?!?!? Let's see that thing!!!"
It's a good time :D

There were some threads on this several months ago that were pretty interesting, you might give those a read.
Only thing I know about them is that you need to raise a burr on the edge, don't know why that is, I guess it gives a better shave...?

Hair is not very hard to cut, so a very thin edge (wire edge or burr) is able to shave with less resistence than a thicker (utility) edge.
The only knife I ever shaved my face with was an Opinel No.7 in carbon (they hadn't started making them in stainless yet). I needed to shave off my beard to match my military ID card picture, and I wasn't about to do it with a Trac II (again). It did draw a few strange looks, especially since the sub was running shallow at the time.

I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.
