Opinion Poll

I'm considering creating one more section to our forums and I'd like your feedback on the idea. This new section would be for more in depth FAQs (e.g. What do all the acronyms mean? How do I post a picture? Common new member questions? Perhaps include new member introductions, a general introduction to our forums and perhaps an explanation of the community here, etc.).

I like our "small" forums, but I believe that an area like this might be useful, particularly for newer members.

So, what's your opinion? Useful or not so much?

Kristi

Certainly sounds good to me. There are occasionally new members that get off to a rough start here, perhaps a newbie FAQ or welcome section would help smooth that out.

I've found "Welcome Mat" type sections in other forums to be very useful. A good way to get up to speed quickly.

Sometimes "Welcome Mat" postings are transferred from the main discussion by the moderator...I think only the mods were allowed to post on the Mat. Would you be able to transfer some of the existing threads to the new forum?

If it is informative and educational with more history, facts and one-thread-per-model, then yes.

I've seen these FAQs sections used on forums before. They work quite nicely... as long as they are read and not ignored.

An in-depth guide or step by step starter tips section for new members would greatly benefit all IMO. I don't see a downside to this. Providing that the monitoring of trolls stays the same. I like the "small" forums here, which is why the Spyderco Forums are my #1.

I think a (small) FAQs section would be useful.

A beginner's guide would be nice for getting up to speed quickly. I lurked for quite a while to get the feel of the forum before posting, this being the first forum of any kind that I actually joined.

Very good idea! Just hope it does not create too much additional work for you Kristi, trying to keep the postings there in line with the section's intent.

The new section would have helped me (being a relative newcomer) BUT it has to be said that the open & honest assistance given by various longer-service members here never ceases to amaze me! ;) :spyder:

A BIG plus for the Spyderco afficianados who commonly share info they have acquired over the years.

I think that FAQ, acronyms, Spyderco history, intro to company people, etc. would be very helpful. Newbie intros are just as good in the general forum IMAO.

For sure I think this is a good idea. Once again as per others comments....usefulness is only limited by these FAQs being read.

It certainly would help newbies. Though in this forum I find that newbies are treated very well. When I was fairly new here I was always treated with respect and now am proud to call Spyderco Forums my second home :D

Keep up the good work Taz. I'm sure many here will help out with the FAQs if you need it.

I think it's a great idea. I know it took me quite a while to get up to speed when I first joined, so this would probably be very helpful to newcomeers.

I think it is a great idea as well. The only thing I would suggest is that if there is a "new member introduction" section some of us should volunteer to be a kind of "welcoming committee" and respond to them in that section. Other forums I have joined that had this kind of section when you introduce yourself it goes unseen.

the FAQ section is a great idea for sure and would be very helpful

I voted no. IMO, it's another area for Kristi to patrol, and one which would cause more work by new people who ignore instructions, use it inappropriately etc.

Things run pretty smoothly for the most part. The ones posting incorrectly or inappropriately will continue to do so without a thought.

I do seem to be in the minority so there's a possibility I just don't get it. My overall philosophy though is the less trouble for Kristi and Sal , the better. Joe

With a lot of the new members coming onboard, I think it is good idea.

As a new member, I think it will be very useful. I had found lots of information in this forum but sometimes I don't know whom to ask or how to put the question.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, keep it coming. I'm considering limiting the posts there to those from us at Spyderco as well as posts from members which would be moderated/approved prior to being made public. Obviously this would not apply to new member introductions (and replies to them) if that is included.

Given my schedule it would all likely be at least a month away, but the feedback right now is key to it's success. Thanks again!
