Hi Guys.

I've been collecting knives for years but am new to Spyderco's products...a friend just sold me a CPM-D2 Millie with that highly polished blade and that's where I have a question:

I love the knife, and have used it as my EDC for a couple of weeks now. What I've noticed is the blade seems to scuff easily. I don't baby my knives but treat them all well - what I've used to clean the blade after use, is mild soap and water followed by wiping it dry with a soft cloth.

Unlike my other D2 bladed knives, in daylight I now see fine scuffing marks on both sides.

Is this normal for that finish? (And like, not to worry about it?)

My other Spydie is a black S30V Millie and I like it just as well!

First of all, welcome to the family!

If your D2 Military had a high polish finish, I suspect someone besides Spyderco polished it. In fact, I suspect that it was waxed and what you are seeing is scuffing of the wax and not of the steel. I know that my D2 Military had a rather low polish finish, with the grind still quite visible. Mine also shows quite a bit of scratching, but I would be amazed if it didn't. I don't use my knives gently.

I've been into Benchmades for years, but in the last few months have been looking closer at Spydies.

Starting off with a couple of Millies makes me want some more. At first I thought the thing was too big, but the ergos and comfort of the knife have made me come 'round.

Maybe that's why I can't take the D2 out of my pocket! :D

I've said before that when you first handle a Military, it's huge. After you use it for a few days, it becomes a normal size, and everything else is just tiny. :D

That's quite true. Now I look at my BM 707 and laugh. It's a nice knife, but it does look really small now...

Compared to that satin finish that's on a lot of your knives by the other brand, the D2 on the Millie definitely appears a lot more polished. Scratches are going to be more noticeable. Just shows they're being used :D

:spyder: :spyder: :cool: :spyder: :spyder: Hey dude....Welcome to Spyderholics 101 :D You're in for a great ride :spyder: As far as I know, D2 is a soft steel....I don't have one, or CPM's D2, so I could be wrong :o :)

I thought D2 was a very hard tough steel.
The D2 Military has a satin blade from the factory and the fine grind lines show quite well.If someone tried to polish the blade those lines would look like scratches.I tried to polish the blade on my stretch and had the same problem.

I think what you're seeing is normal. Some pictures would help, though. :-)

Also, by no means is D2 soft. Heck, it's often used in dies to cut other steel. :cool:
