What was the knife Lecter used in Hannibal?

Postby Erin T » Wed Jan 02, 2002 1:00 am

Hello my name is Erin M. Trimble.I'm 16 years old, and an avide knife enthusiast. This is my first time posting here and I am very interested in the Spyderco brand of knives . My first question is what model and style of Spydie did Anthony (Hannibal Lecter) Hopkins use in HANNIBAL? It looked like a Harpy but when I paused and zoomed in on my DVD it appeared to have a plain edge.I haven't been able to find a knife of that type. Any imformation would be appretiated.

That was a Spyderco Harpy. Plain Edged, those are still available somehow. I was able to buy a serrated or plain edged Harpy when I bought mine.

It looks like you started getting interested in Spyderco Knives after you read/saw Hannibal and his beautiful knife, don't you?

Hi Erin, welcome to the forum.

You might not get many posts to this question, as it was very reciently covered in extreme depth (winks at Hanibal ), it is not that people on this forum are unsocialble, it is just they are a little battle weary

To answer your question, Hanibal is right, even though the book just described it as a Harpy (normally only serrated), the film makers seemed to have got hold of a quite rare (until this coming year), plain edged Harpy.

Stick around and you will learn an awful lot about knives, and Spydercos in particular.

Yog,

the book clearly describes it as a serrated Harpy but in the movie he uses a plain edge. I think that Spyderco should put out a specially autographed Hannable Lecter model Harpy, also Mariner and Civilian. I always wondered why HL didn't make more use of the Civ, a perfect knife for his purposes.

I hear that they are remaking Manhunter (Red Dragon. If you are a Thomas Harris fan, you really should see Manhunter.

Welcome to the forum.
Response to your Q:OH NO not again.
There has been so much on this That I thought it was getting a little silly. There has even been one thread removed from the forum because it was getting so many of the wrong type of responses.
IMO that type movie is not very good addvertising for Spyderco.

ello Erin T,
welcome to the forum
you are right it was a harpy, plain edged version, discontinued now so hard to get hold of... BUT they are being re-released sometime this year in plain edge with a VG-10 blade (thats a good thing)
