I recently got one of the Byrd Duckfoot Sharpeners and have been happily playing with it ever since. The Duckfoot is a sorta triangular shaped diamond impregnated piece of steel, that has many, many different surfaces and angles with which you can sharpen a plethora of edged objects. Knives are a given of course, with a 20 degree angle built in like the Sharpmaker, but this little baby will do nail clippers, pinking shears, tin snips, potato peelers, fish hooks, router bits, and just about anything with an edge on it once you figure out where on the Duckfoot you need to put the edge. It comes with an instructional DVD featuring Sal, and his presentation makes you want to find out if there is anything it can't sharpen. Small, compact, and flat, the Duckfoot is easy to carry anywhere, and being diamond coated, it'll make short work of sharpening chores. I'm thoroughly impressed!!

The Duckfoot is a very nice tool, I’ve used it to touch up my Ranger RD’s 6, 7and 9 it did a great job and very quickly.

Just posted this at BFC too. I was going to try mine on my lawn mower blade without removing it. I will have to check on the DVD, my box didn't have one.

Interesting story about the Duckfoot.

The first time I saw it was at Blade '06. I was with my eldest son who was then eight years old. He had brought some hard-earned cash with which he'd purchase a couple of $1 folders in presentation boxes (one for his best friend, one for him) and a Pakistani made hunting style knife. He had chosen a black bladed Native from me as I had promised him a gift knife for coming along.

During our two days at Blade, we went back to the Spyderco booth often. My Erik got to watch Eric Glesser flip a 'fly and Joyce demo'd the Bifold and Auto prototypes (damned shame I probably won't ever get to own any of these latter offerings).

After securing my son's treasures, we went back to the Spyderco booth. Sal pulled out a Duckfoot and started telling us of it's virtues. During his demo, Sal asked if we had anything he could sharpen. I keep my EDC pretty sharp and there was no way he could improve on the NIB Native. Out came the Pakistani blade. I will tell you, it was probably more of a thrill for me than for Erik. I will however remind him many times in the future about the time THE Sal Glesser sharped his $7 knife. :cool:

His 10th birthday is coming up. I might have to get him a Duckfoot.

Call Spyderco to see if you can get the DVD - a successful lawnmower blade story might help. :) If you can't get a DVD from Spyderco, I can send you mine if you pay the postage.

Funnily enough the Byrd Duckfoot was something I won in a competition a few months ago. Until last week (when someone asked me what I thought of my prize) I had not used it.

So I thought it was time to see Sal in all his glory on the instructional DVD.

I gave it a go, and wow ! I am impressed by its usefulness and simplicity. Sure, the Sharpmaker is a bit more of a refined sharpening tool ad can probably get your knives a bit sharper than the Duckfoot. But for sheer simplcity of ripping it out of its leather pouch and running your EDC on it, it cannot be beaten. Setup is just that....pull out of leather sheath....START sharpening. Sharpmaker take a bit longer to setup.

I'm impressed. For NKP's and folks who use knives but like thm to be as sharp as butter knives, this is a good present to give them. Personally I'd be inclined to use the Duckfoot in combo with my Sharpmaker to get the best of both.
