Glad to have you on the forums. :)

It really depends on what your preferences are, and what you plan to use it for.

Personally, I like the PE (Plain Edge) Caly3. It has a "Full-Flat Grind", which is excellent for slicing and pure cutting power; however, it's not so good for tougher jobs that might damage the edge, for something like that, I would recommend a Delica or Endura. The Delica and Endura are also cheaper than the Caly3 (another question that you need to ask yourself: How much am I willing to spend?).

If money is no object, and you want a knife that will CUT, then I would put in a hearty recommendation for the Caly3 (as I'm sure many other people will, as well).

The Byrd series are great "test" knives; they're cheap, and allow you to get a feel for unfamiliar handle materials and blade shapes without breaking the bank. They have lower quality steel than the main lineup, but it's still pretty darn good stuff.

I'd like to give you this piece of advice: Think carefully about what you want this knife for (tougher jobs, a beater knife, an outdoors knife, a dress knife...), and then once you've finally decided, wait a few days before ordering (unless it's some rare knife that might be gone in a few days); you might have changed your mind, I know it's happened to me. ;)

Opening boxes, cutting anything that needs cut. No special use. I am asking what YOUR favorite is. Just curious what other people find to be the best for EDC.

My favorites are probably odd choices and don't really apply to others. I usually carry either; a mini Persian, the Captain, Volpe, or Lava. When I was cutting down a lot of boxes I carried either an SE SS Harpy or an SE Dodo.

For most people though I would think either a Caly or Delica would be the way to go.

Short answer:
as a first EDC knife, I'd choose
Delica, Endura or Caly III. Great intro Spydies, all of them.

Long answer:
-> What Blackhair said.

You can't go wrong with any of the Spyderco lineup for EDC (ok, most of them... minus P'kal, perhaps Captain and a few(!) others :) ), so it all boils down to what YOU like and need (and can afford, of course  ). Nobody can choose for you because we all differ in taste (and thank god for that :D )

That said, I'd still suggest to consider one of the three above-named knives as your first Spydie. They've evolved for a long time now and are close to perfect.

Welcome to the forums! Enjoy your stay.

:spyder: :spyder:  :spyder: :spyder: Hey dude, and Welcome to Spyderforums....This is your final destination in finding the Finest in Cutlery technology  I've been collecting Spyderco's, since 1994, and before coming here, I was well versed in blade steels, materials, and was, as I am now, a true Spyderholic  However, after joining this Spyderific forum, I have learned so much more from all Spyderminds here, and I am quite sure I will learn more :) So, to answer your question, I agree with what advice that you've been given; I would also like to say it depends on what size, and weight you will be confortable with. Does lock type matter to you? I would sugjest a Caly3(I have the Spyderedge), a E, or D4(If you buy a Foliage green g-10, let us know how you like it), and the mini Manix(a real cutting machine  ) Hope this helps you, and let us know what you picked.

I'd say of the lockbacks I own the Lava is the hardest to open. The Persian isn't any harder than any other lockback I own.

Hi and welcome to the forums! As for the Mini Persian being kind of stiff to open, I know mine is. It's still a great knife and I like to carry it on dressier occasions and occasionally for general EDC. My personal favorite EDC is a Military. I almost always have one on me, but I also usually carry a serrated blade (Tasman Salt), and a smaller, more "PC" blade like a Lava or Cricket. Today I have a CE Millie, Pink PE Endura, SE Cricket and SE Tasman on me.

Like most everyone has said, you really can't go wrong with either a Delica or Caly 3. I might also suggest the Lava and/or Cricket. All four of these knives are great EDC's and will easily handle the chores you listed. It all depends on what YOU like and how much your budget will allow you.

Have fun with your decision!

I'll procedd with caution; once you get a Spydie there is no saying when to stop. I'm also new to this and the Forum is fillled with good suggestions. You should consider what the knife is for and what is affordable; they are all quality tools.
I bought a Byrd flight on 07 and now I have 11 spyders in the web. I like the Cricket, the Endura G-10 and the Tasman Salt.

My favorites stand unchallenged:

Caly 3 VG-10 PE
Spin Etched

I just sold my CE FG D4 to my neighbor. I plan on grabbing a white Dragonfly SE when it comes out. Maybe another D4 after that.

My recommendation is

The Tenacious...great price point, good ergos, fantastic first Spyderco.

That being said the top 5 Spydies in my EDC Rotation...

Manix (full sized) D2 FG Military, FFG FG Endura, DKPK, Tenacious.

Honorable mentions, but maybe not ideal for a first Spydie.
Waved D4 Endura, Police, ZDP Delica, D'allara, Tasman Salt.

My hands down EDC favorite has to be the new G-10 Endura, after that the SS E4 and then the Military.

Good thread. Welcome, jmazzi and Pedro!

I love my VG-10/G-10 PE Caly 3 for EDC.

To answer your question about PE vs. SE, I'd say that PE works best for me for general random carry. It's great for opening packages, opening envelopes, cutting food, etc. For me, SE is best for breaking down cardboard for recycling, cutting rope or fabric (great for turning old garments into rags!), etc. Those tasks happen mostly at home or at times I can plan for, so my preferred carry knife is PE while my SE stays mainly at home unless I'm headed for some gnarly, fibrous cutting chore.

But many around here would disagree with me about this.

My large Persian (C-83) was little harder to open than other lock backs, but after couple hundred openings (what else to do while watching TV :D ) it is became OK.
Also Ed Schempp has recommendation, see post #25
http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.p ... 227&page=2

mini Persian was much easier to open. Great knives.
