Thanks...so for setting the tubes, do you just get a tight fit between tube and scales, and epoxy in place? Or are you flaring the tubes so they "lock in" to the scales? Is there any flaring/squishing/deforming the tops of the tubes that occurs, to make the fit more secure? And if so, does that raise the risk of cracking the scales?

No flaring, squishing needed as epoxy is good enough in my book. I use slow curing epoxy and never had a issue with pins or tubes in any of my knives and I make some hard working hunters outside of mules

This was completed in 2019. MT27 PD#1 with Amboyna burl scales and full custom Sheath. I really wish I would've bought a couple more sets of the Amboyna because the blanks available at that time were unlike any other I've seen since.

No sir, I mainly used a dealer named Island Woods from Hawaii because he had a huge selection of exotic species. I'll definitely look into them though.

My Sexy Rexy. Rex 76 camp knife. Zebrawood with integral guard. Shaped on a Wen oscillating drum sander. Polished with scotch brite wheels, then put on a burnished carnauba wax finish with felt wheel. Old pipe maker taught me that finish 65 years ago and gave me a big piece of wax. I still have 90 percent of that wax. The carnauba makes a squeaky kind of grippy finish very secure.

I used four power tools, a drill press, a table saber saw, a belt sander and the oscillating drum sander. All of those and the tools needed for them will easily fit in a 2 foot on a side cube with room to spare. Have to be resourceful when you travel full time and live in a travel trailer.

This is the first knife handle I have ever made, made lots of handles for fishing rods. Knife will get a leather lace lanyard. I have a temporary no frills leather sheath.

So how do those circular brass connectors work? Did you make them yourself from tubes of brass? And how do you "set" them?

I found a few 3/8" brass ball bearing sleeves, they were about $2/pc at Ace. I had tried to set them using epoxy an then expanding them into place using a press. However, since i hadn't annealed the brass prior to, one of them did split slightly.

Sorry I have so many questions. I would do same, I would want to expand as well as epoxy. When you expanded the tubes into place, you used what to do that? I'm thinking, a (turned off) drill press with a 45 degree countersink bit or something like that, and you just press the 45 degree countersink down to spread or to "bell" the outside edge of the tube slightly?

Hadn't thought about the annealing. So in that case, heat either side of the brass tube with a torch beforehand?

Oh man those are perfect! For anyone who hasn't seen Amboyna in person its covered in chatoyance just like curly species. The difference is the shapes and depth it has due to it being burled makes you wanna stare at it for hours finding new layers and shapes with every little twist in the light.

I had used a 1-ton arbor press from Harbor Freight

just finished this SPY27, it was an experiment using M5 SS bolts, with the heads turned down to fit a 3/8" dia countersink.
next time will drill all three dia holes for each bolt, at once, to ensure proper alignment.
first time using olivewood for scales, like this wood a bunch.
