I don't use the finished size to drill all the way through any soft materials. For a corby I drill an 1/8" hole though everything without concern for tearout (plus I use sharp drills, good vises, proper spindle speed and proper feed speeds) and then I make the larger counter bore from the outside in. The end result is clean. If I want to use an 1/8" pin (for example) I drill everything through for alignment with 3/32" for soft materials like wood or .120" for metal and then finish with a 1/8" straight flute chucking reamer from the outside in. This gives me a clean result and round holes.

I got lucky in that I am the knife guy and he is the wood worker. Together we have a lot of fun. We found some more scraps of walnut laying around and got to making a few swappable sets. We are both putting together a hiking/camping setup and it’s turning out better than the first go. We also worked out the dimensions so I can use the kydex sheath I bought when I first got Halpern contoured scales. The Mule had watermelon duty tonight. We did the board in the pictures and these scales around the same time.

I bought a set of chucking reamers back when I was hot for metal work, and have never used them yet. Now you've given me a purpose...

Great pics! It's cool to see a hand-made Mule handle at work. That's a great looking cutting board too :cool: .

That's a great looking Mule! The red really does come through in the sunlight. Very nicely done.

Very excited to be taking a long weekend trip into the woods in a cabin with my wife in a few week! I've really been itching to get back in the woods since we sold our camper in the spring of 2020.
I plan on only bringing my Kershaw Camp 10 machete and the PMA11 Mule I won in Larry's giveaway a few months back.
I've been using the Mule at work here and there, as well as with trimming tasks with the landscaping. Really looking forward to giving it some use in the woods!! I'll likely create my own thread with my experiences and photos throughout the week. Can't wait!

That chocolate and vanilla is sweet! I really like the clean reveal around the edges.
I finally had a chance to use my new S45VN with the Birdseye Maple scales. The boiled linseed oil finish finally cued enough that I could use it.
Not much of a test but it sure made short work of the fathers day barbecue duties.

Ah...I'd asked what finish in another thread, I should have looked here first. Very nice, very very nice. Now I'm on the hunt for some birdseye maple. I can't tell if the orange cast is the wood, stain, or the setting sun, but I really like the look.
Did you try the trick of sanding the scales with >500 grit while still wet with BLO? I did one scale that way, and another with no wet sanding, and the wet-sanded scale is noticeably smoother.
