Phew! That thread about Chad's design being stolen has created
( or resurrected ) this thread on rip-offs by COMmmunist CHIna
( or CHICOMs to use the old army shorthand.) Perhaps Sal will chime
in on this'n. Not only are such atrocities an insult to the original
manufacturer, they can sully their reputation if an unsuspecting
buyer doesn't know the difference.

Josh @ PVK / knifezilla.com deal's ( sadly ) in a few such knives, I
personally don't tend towards'em and as decent as some of the
"pacific rim" knives are getting I frown on sending $$$ to a hostile
communist foreign power ( I even frown to an extent on Japan, but
hey, they make those samurai swords! So cutlery's second nature
to'em! ). Are there legal remedies for such non-sense? Yes, but they're
often co$tly and can take decades in the court system ( which is
why I understand Sal just shake's his head & soldiers on )

Other than my long winded feelings on this, what does the consensus
say regards this other CHICOM attempt to dominate the market?

One knife maker i know spent thousands of dollars in an attempt to combat Chinese made copies of his designs. He was awared a grand total of $250 in compensation. It's often not cost effective to go after such manufacturers, and it's something they thrive on unfortunately.

A friend of mine suggested this:

talk to the manufacturers in China and make a KO version of your own knife,
so that it is under you.

A long time ago when I tried to produce one of my own designs,
I talked to a Chinese company before, and they wanted to produce
a crazy amount. They were a real powerhouse when it came to numbers,
but didn't seem to care too much about quality, they said I could make
it pretty much as cheap as I wanted.

Disrespect for intellectual property angers me regardless of what country the perpetrators reside in.

True on one level Allen, but the issue is, unfortunately a bit more complex. You are dealing, after all, with two very different cultures. One of which made a purely arbitrary decision that ideas were a form of property which could be owned, sold, and bought. The other of which, even before almost totally rejecting the concept of individual ownership of property of any kind, had no concept of intangible property. So there's more to it than "right or wrong", since the two cultures respective views of what is considered property and what are considered "rights" are not the same.

Look at all the problems that arose when the European view of real estate as something which could belong to an individual or group met the Native American's quite different way of viewing the land. Some practices which we in "western civilization" consider pedophilia are considered perfectly normal "rites of passage" in tribal socieities elsewhere.

As for intellectual property, even right here in the west, the respect for it has been dealt a serious, perhaps fatal, blow by the internet. The percentage of people, especially in the "under 30" age group, who consider it perfectly acceptable to steal music, films, software, and other forms of IP - as long as the theft can be accomplished electronically via the internet, is depressingly large. The sad fact seems to be that, if the risk is low enough, many people will steal.

after having a few of my designs ripped off (not knife related)
I can say it is not a good feeling,
it wasn't even about the money,
at least give me credit so I can put it on my resume.

on the other hand sometimes it goes too far,
esp. with martial arts, it's human expression, human movement,

is it just me or trying to protect an invention that is super simple,
is like trying to keep the wave from eroding your sand castle?

Aloha Allen,

Thanks again for everything Allen. You are correct about those who "do not know the difference." I know a few guys who buy knock offs by the gazillions off some "shopping network". Their mentality is, "It looks exactly the same-sorta-but at least I don't have to pay "X-amount" for the real thing. Plus if it breaks during the first use or gets dull, I can throw it away and I got 49 more. It probably is just as good anyway...I mean, they LOOK the same...SORTA." :eek: :confused: :eek:

Just because it looks the same, don't mean it works/is the same...oh, the uneducated knife buyer...
