Manix, cutting machine

#1

Post by Gary W Graley »

Folks, I've owned a lot of folders and just finished cutting up a nice large
cardboard box, the grip and feel that the Manix provides is very secure
Very solid feeling when cutting, no wimpy gripping handle, you know
where it's cutting and feel in control, very nice!

Also wondered what was the origin of the name for the knife

Manix...as from the detective series Mannix?,
which rather dates me I'm afraid ;)

Thanks Sal and gang for a very solid knife!

I just used my Manix to slice up some apples for my son. Its nice having such a versatile "big" folder in your pocket... reading for anything!

mannix was the best detective show ever. do you remember the beginning with all the great photography and music? mannix was cool. so was peggy. do you think he carried a manix? check the new catalog, you can get a brand new manix for less than dinner for two at red lobster.

Yes, Manix is a great cutter. For the mine (C95 PE) is not problem to cut off > 0.5 cm branch (wich I do frequently) without any visible signs on the edge. I aslo destructed with it one big cardboard box - like cutting butter. I have never got such good a knife.

Happy New Year to all.

Congrats on the Manix. I really like my Manix, as it fits my hands like a glove and has very good cutting performance for the massive size and strength.

Thanks for the welcome!
I have now the Caly 3 in G10 and the Manix, can't afford to get the
mini-manix right now, but, I think it would be a fight for my right
front pocket between the Caly and mini, so I'll live with these two
for now.

I owned the Manix a while back but never got to use her much if
at all, someone got a deal when I had to sell ! But now after a little
use, not really all that hard but enough to see the merits, glad to
have this one back.

chipping

#8

Post by stoneman »

I bought the Manix intending to use it as my work beater so a few dings and scratches are to be expected. I didn't however expect the blade edge to chip on me. The worst of it is I haven't even brought it to work yet :( It hasn't cut anything harder than a cardboard box and when I opened it the other day there it was. I've heard S30V had a tendency to do so but thought it would've required some genuine hard use for that to happen. I still love the knife but needless to say I'm a little disappointed.

Factory edge, right? It has been discussed once or twice before. Try giving it a good sharpening. I usually do this before I ever use a knife. I have encountered too many factory edges where the burr was not removed to trust any of them. If you take it down to fresh steel, ensure the burr has been removed, establish your edge, and the problem occurs again, then it may be a real problem that Sal needs to see.

Well the short time I had my second one, she stayed very sharp and didn't
see any chipping, again, someone else picked up a value from me :)

While it cut very well, my needs seem to drift back to the Caly3 which
I still have! and took her along on my trip back to Brazil where she is
serving me nicely, pocket razor for sure.

The Manix for me ended up being too large for what I end up needing
a knife for, maybe this time I've learned, I hope so, can't keep buying
and then selling at a loss all the time

excellent photo Gary
I like to strop my S30V blades on leather/chromium oxide before "heavy cardboard duty"....If i can polish the edge up real nice, i don't have any microchipping problems ;)

Hey Gary, I should take at least some of the blame for you getting another beast! ;) :D

The Manix has pretty much pushed everything else (including a Krein'd ZDP Endura) out of my pocket. I am simply amazed by everything about it! I have no problem whatsoever with chipping. I keep the edge polished with a Lansky ultra-fine ceramic.

Has anyone else experienced a bit of vertical blade play in a Manix? I've noticed with mine, the locking bar doesn't sit quite as flush with the blade open, as it does closed.
God Bless Texas!

My Manix83mm has zero blade play; my Manix maybe 1mm vertical blade play, zero lateral play....in actual use, i don't really notice it :)

You're welcome! :D Was your first Manix the older type or the newer type, like your new one?

My Mini has zero (once I get around to tightening the pivot screw, that is). My Manix has a teeny, tiny bit; less than 1mm. I'm sure it's something most ''normal'' :p people wouldn't even notice.

Hi Gary,

So, I guess its a good thing that we don't have a knife called "Peter Gunn" or "Mr. Lucky?"

Then I would be dated... LOL

Ok, to get this thing back on topic...

The Manix is an awesome heavy duty folder, but a little too much for my pocket.

Now if I only knew where to get a nice leather sheath for it. :D

Ahh, but you don't flip it open and closed just for the fun of it, do you? :p

I have had the full size model for a few years now. Still no blade play! It's beat up pretty good too. My ALL time favorite large folder. If I could find a Large PE around I'd buy 2.
