How about MBC tape time. These are those I want to see in it showing every mbc and non mbc blade defensives all from spyderco, all doing some sparring with blades(trainers of course).

Bram vs. Massad /Mike Janich versus James Keating or whatever combo now that would be entertainment at its absolute best<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Dear Whosyour:

Thanks for the idea. Although MBC videos are talked about frequently in Spyderco "head sheds," we have yet to get a handle on what would be most beneficial and most cost effective. Good quality video products take lots of work, lots of time, and lots of money. If we're going to do it right (the ONLY way we will do it), we need to make those investments.

You should also note that Spyderco is necessarily wary about which programs they officially endorse. At present, they only offer full endorsement to the MBC courses I teach in Colorado and that stated curriculum. They "support" Bram's program and the other programs taught by Jim Keating and Mas Ayoob, but have not offered them full endorsement. The reason for this is simply that they haven't had the time to review the other programs in detail to determine whether they are consistent with Spyderco's mindset and philosophy.

I have been fortunate to be exposed to most of what Jim Keating offers and recommend it all without reservation. Bram's core blade curriculum closely parallels Jim's and his Gunting program is natural, practical outgrowth of that. As such, I also recommend it highly. Mas has trained extensively with the knife and has a unique approach to its use that is also very worthy of investigation. When it comes to legal aspects of self-defense, Mas is also the best in the business.

The point of all this is that the videos covering most of what you're looking for have already been produced. If you're looking for instruction in the defensive use of edged weapons, it already exists. Check out the Paladin web site (www.paladin-press.com) for videos featuring everyone mentioned here (me included) and links to their web sites and other videos.

As for videos of us sparring, don't hold your breath. Sparring in knife training is a separate issue and one about which I have strong opinions. It has its place, but in a training program geared toward legally justifiable self-defense, that place is, in my opinion, pretty small.

Sorry to disappoint you, but perhaps a good second choice to a video of me sparring with James Keating would be Godzilla vs. Mothra. It's a little known fact, but Jim actually can fly for short distances and I have destroyed Tokyo on occasion (at least selected portions of it).

Stay safe,

Mike
