I collect Harpies and other knives of the genus hawkbill, but I'm not into the history that much...I'm sure some of the collecting pros will chime in on this one! :spyder:

:spyder: They come from the maritime industry from the need to reach up and sever rope one handed, the hawkbill facilitates draw cuts as the rope can't slip off the edge, just reach up and pull. :spyder:
Thanks Guys!

Stainless Steel -
No steel marking - integral lockspring and backspacer RH and LH version in both PE and SE
G-2 marking - integral lockspring and backspacer RH and LH versions in both PE and SE
G-2 markings - separate lockspring - RH and LH (possibly) versions in SE and PE (possibly)
GIN-1 markings - same as above
ATS-55 marking - same as above, but LH and PE versions less likely
VG-10 version - RH SE only for US market, RH PE available in Japanese market packaging only.
G-10 - as far as I know, only version is RH SE single liner in ATS-55
FRN - these are a bit confusing,
Intorduced as the Merlin, with an integral clip handle, SE only no steel markings - steel marked version possible.
Dropped from the lineup.
Re-introduced in 2000 as the FRN Harpy in ATS-55 and SE only with a barrel bolt clip handle
Renamed the Merlin once again - still ATS-55 but available PE and SE, .
Dropped again.
That listing may be incomplete, or inaccurate, but it's a start.

Goodness Paul, You are just full of information. I'm not sure most Spyderco employees could give that good of history.

YVW Sal, but was hoping you might have confirmed or denied one or two of my "possibles".

:)

More like a little knowledge and the realization that the only way to get "the straight dope" on older models is to be willing to guess wrong, and wait for someone to correct you.

I'll second that. I've been trying to put together a list of all the varieties of the C09 CoPilot. Most of the data comes from knives I've bought or seen photos of. Like Paul said, but out your best guess and wait to see if it gets shot down.
