I've seen a couple of threads where people talked about this, but I've missed any pics of people who have actually done this.

I'd love to see pictures, and hear about who might be best for this type of work.

Not fond enough of CF to have it done, not sure if anyone else has. But, if you're talking scales as on the regular bolster and scales Kiwi, then your best bet would probably be to acquire some CF and speak to Bill Wirtel at Santa Fe Stone Works. I *think* that because they do all their cutting and polishing in a water bath, the CF dust would not be a problem for them. There's only one way to know for sure.

If you're talking full CF scales, as on the Caly 3, not sure who to recommend, CF is fairly nasty stuff to work with. Either way, would love to see the finished product if you go through with it.

Anybody have recommendations on where to source Carbon Fiber scales? I'd be more interested in grippy CF, then slick. The CF on the Caly III is pretty nice. I haven't had experience with the peel ply variety, but it sounds like that might not go well with the elegance of the Kiwi.

That does bring up a interesting point. Unlike micarta and G-10 the only CF knife scales that I've ever seen have been flat. The Kiwi handle is rounded. That would pretty well rule out anything with a texture since it's the outer surface which has to be shaped down to fit the knife, then re-polished. While micarta and G-10 look great when contoured and polished, not sure if, or how well, that would work with CF.

If you're still considering the idea, I'd suggest checking with Bill as to how thick (minimum) CF you would need, then seeing what Dragonplatehas to offer.

The CF bolster on my BM 690 have a slight convex curve to them, so at least it's possible. Not sure how hard it is to do though.

CF interests me, too. If you could post updates on what you find out from SFSW I would appreciate it.

I might check with CHAX or STR, but don't wait on me, if you're interested in this yourself. I think I'm going to settle in first, with the jigged bone that I have, actually.. just received in a trade (trade is actually still finalizing!).

Pictures on CHAX's site definately show CF in rounded handles, so it's definately possible.

If anybody else has done this, I'd love to see pic's.

I probably won't pull the trigger on this right away, but now know what I'd have to scrape together, to get it done.

Whoo hoo!! I couldn't have asked for a better outcome, to hear about this from my little thread.

Can't wait. Now.. of course, we'll have the inevitable question of.. what style CF (I think the matte on the Caly III would probably be the most obvious choice, if it is able to be contoured or maybe a new cross-weave CF is coming from Spyderco?)

Sal - is that with bolsters, or without? Hopefully - without.

I have a Koji Hara with a body and clip made out of carbon fiber that is quite curvy, contoured and polished. So I know it can be done. But I would definitely be in for a carbon fiber Kiwi in '08.
