My Chinook II Question.

#1

Post by rolyat1978 »

I purchased my Chinook II from Smokey Mountain Knife Works and absolutely love it, however, shortly after purchasing I noticed the blade was a little loose. The knife could be flicked open with a simple snap of the wrist(that doesn't bother me), but the blade had a small bit of play(that did bother me). I looked at the hex/torx screws at the top of the handle and they looked a bit "stripped." I would not condsider doing my own knife maintenance ever without the proper tools and have not attempted any "fine tuning" of this knife. Should I send it back to Spyderco to look over or should I contact the dealer.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I think something is wrong. My Chinook 1 needs a very strong wristflick to open it half way. Because it's a very strong lockback I think that's normal. So opening it as easy as a Liner lock what you say I would consider that not normal

Chinook II

My Chinook II will easily open with a flick of the wrist. I don't do this too often, due to accelerated wear on the knife that will occur using this practice.

There is absolutely zero blade play in my Chinook II. If you have significant blade play and possible stripped screws, I think you should let the good professionals at Spyderco Warranty and Repair take a look.

You talking up and down play, or side to side? Every folder (pretty much) will have a little bit of side to side wiggle... but up and down is really unacceptable in that sort of quality knife. I have a Chinook III, its very solid. I'd look into a repair/replacement.

Track Record?

#6

Post by Bolster »

Does Spyderco have a good track record in tightening up lockbacks that have up/down play?

I purchased 4 mini Persians some time ago (for gifts, not all for me!) and one had excessive up/down play, so much so that it was distracting. So I sent it back in for a fixer, and it was returned with a note that said, basically, "We did the best we could," and the blade play was no different than when sent in.

This did not make me :) .

That knife got traded off at the first opportunity, to someone who did not care about the blade play as they were not going to use it, just look at it.

But on a sample of 1, which is too small to make a generality, I question whether Spyderco will really take out vertical play, if you send it in. You might just get the apology note like I did.
