Glass breaker/emergency kits?

#1

Post by KSDbass »

I got T-boned last night, and luckily all I needed was my rescue, but I'd like to have a glass breaker and such just in case. What do you guys use, and where can I get it? I was thinking about the Assist II, but I'm not sure yet. I think I would prefer something like a hammer to break glass with.

P.S.- The EMS guys wouldn't tell me who won the Notre Dame game, so who won?

Here's a hammer made specifically for that purpose. Know AG Russell sells them, am sure many other places do as well. The problem, I would think, would be finding a place to mount it where it will be easy to reach without being in the way, and will not be easily dislodged during an accident.

As for me, I drive a ragtop, so I alway have an "alternate exit". :D

I keep meaing to buy an Assist I (with the glass breaker). I keep putting it off though. I live in Florida and there's a lot of water around here so it's of particular interest to me.

Deacon, we were in a Jeep Cherokee, and it definitely saved our lives. I'm willing to sacrifice some space or looks to have it easily accessible, I was thinking to the ceiling if the mount is strong enough, or under the dash, or on top of the dash. When you have to find space for a 35" tire, a lifehammer is a piece of cake :D

I have Res-Q-Me from the same folks that make the LifeHammer that Paul has.

Both my wife and I have blue ones on our keychain.

Well sorry to point out the enemys products but the
Benchmade Model 10105 - ERT-1™ Hook/Rescue is pretty cool.

I got to mess with one the other day and they work quite well.

I second David Lowry's ResQMe recommendation.

They are inexpensive and reliable. I keep one in my car and one in my firejacket.

Assist I

That is all you need. I keep one in the door of each of my vehicles and while I have not had to use it yet, my brother the paramedic/EMT/Fireman thinks it is a great tool to have.

I used my Assist to break a drunk driver's front passenger window at the end of vehicular pursuit. (police chase) She had driven into her garage, and the automatic door closed behind her. It looked like she was trying to put the car into gear again, so it seemed the right time to use glass breaker, as her doors were locked. She lost a car window, but I may have have saved her garage door, or the rear wall of her garage, plus damage to her car. Plus, it was fun. :)

As a Firefighter I never used the spring-loaded-carbide-tipped-glass-breaker that I carried. If you're outside of the car there is always something to break a side window with (even a regular :spyder :) . Just pop that bad boy against one of the corners and Bob's your uncle.

If you're in the car cutting away the seatbelt is more problematic as the latch may have jammed. I NEVER used an knife to do this, not even the Jackknife captured razor cutter I carried. I always used EMT shears (I am waiting for those H1 shears I read about).

Breaking a window from inside a vehicle is a problem if you are injured and the door stuck (though climbing out said window if you don't have the strength to break it without a "popper" would be interesting to say the least, but better than staying in a conflagration-risk vehicle).

Whatever you pick, make sure it is SECURELY fastened to whatever surface you choose, and that it is easy to reach without moving much from an upright driving position. It's hard to move in a vehicle that has been in a major MVA and things go flying like you wouldn't believe unless they are bolted down tight.

I just have the spring-loaded automatic center punches in each of my vehicles.
