Would a Hawkbill like the Harpy CF SE be recommended to clip on a Lady's purse for SD, or somthing like a pink Delica PE? Please comment.

Hi, dale,

For discreet SD carry, I recommend the CF Harpy. I think the pink Delica is too garish. The elegant high-gloss finish of the CF scales would blend better with the textured leather of a Louis Vuitton or Gucci purse. Also, the Harpy is an amazing cutter. Later,

If you are going to be using it for SD I really wouldn't be advertising its presence by using a pink or any brightly coloured handles. Best go for a black or dark coloured FRN or G10. Light, easy to grab, and fast deployment all make for a good SD knife. I'd even look at a waved Delica, but if in purse not sure of the wave would be any good.

Just make sure the good lady practices opening it fast, and keep practising it. The more practise she gets in the easier it would be for her to open in times of extreme duress.

Of course a FB would be the best solution, but discreteness would call for a smallish folder. Even a small gentlemans (gentlewomans  ) folder would make a good enough SD blade for emergencies. But those here who have seen and handled a Matriarch or Civilian would ikely say those are the best for SD. I'd say it may be overkill (pardon the pun).....BUT if it saves your life then it is worth having it.

If it's being carried purely for SD, then I think the SE Tasman Salt would be a better choice than the CF Harpy. The high gloss finish of the CF is pretty, but it offers nothing in the way of grip.

SD Knife

#6

Post by KaliGman »

The choice of knife depends to some extent on the user and what feels "comfortable" in her hand. A Tasman is a good hawkbill, as Deacon said. As for me, unless the lady is really in love with the hawkbill, I would recommend a Delica or Endura with FRN handles. Both of these are readily available, relatively cheap, and will work well for thrusting as well as cutting (thrusting being something that the average hawkbill, unless in expert hands, is not very good at).

As always, training is the key. A well trained individual can make any tool reasonably effective. The best "combat" knife in the world might not help that much without good training.

SD Knife for the Purse

#7

Post by Dr. Snubnose »

This might seem a little unorthdox but I suggest some sort of Push Dagger type knife for the purse. It's a fixed blade...nothing to open while under stress, plenty to hold on to as far as a handle goes, and the sheath can be tethered down inside or outside the purse or put on a static cord. If she is like most women the purse will be heavy (as most carry everything short of the kitchen sink in their handbags) just dropping the purse with her hand wrapped around her push dagger handle might be enough to draw the knife all by itself. Spyderco does not make a push dagger but other companies do...If she is really wanting a folder for the purse I would suggest the old standbys The Delica, Endura, Caly Jr. or Native (whichever feels most comfortable in her hand). I don't see anything wrong with having a colored FRN handle as it will be easier to find amongst the other goodies in her purse...The only way I would say a colored handle is a disadvantage would be if it were hanging outside of the purse and it should not be doing that anyway...so I say a little color spices things up....If she carries a cellphone in a lanyard case I think something non-lethal like a "Stinger" could be another option, attach it right to the lanyard and the cell phone case can be carried by the Stinger already in hand if she senses she might have a problem.....Doc :D

Please pardon my ignorance, Doctor, but other than the pointy end of a honeybee, what is a "Stinger"?

This is my EDC SD weapon....

It's a little on the large side so I'm thinking about saving up for one of these.

harpy I think requires pulling & ripping which is getting down n dirty.
maybe a diff. knife would be better.

Hey, if full grown men can use the Endura, Police, Military, etc for SD, why are we automatically suggesting the smallest models? My question is, is there a particular reason you're looking at the Delica and Harpy? In other words, is there a reason why you're not considering larger knives? Hey, maybe the Delica or some other sub 3" folder is ideal for her circumstaces, I don't know. But I think there hasn't been enough info given to limit it to that size just yet. If I had to fight for my life, I would like a fully serrated Military or Endura over a Delica. Don't get me wrong though, I think a sub 3" knife can work just fine, but if I have a choice in the matter and it doesn't make it any different to me in terms of carry and deployment, I'd definitely go bigger.
Also "Kaizen1" on BF, "ignoramus" on CPF & EDCF. "kaizenrei" on KF, "Kaizen" on USN.

yeah I kinda agree with ignoramus,
if she's not uncomfortable with a bigger knife, I'd go with that,
maybe she likes the Endura?
