Contractor Friend Needs Unbreakable Knife...

#1

Post by Bolster »

I have a contractor friend who breaks knives because he pries with them. He knows its wrong, but he won't stop. He's very intelligent, and a craftsman, but he won't treat a knife with respect. He gets in a rush, he needs to pry, his knife is handy, and *pop*. I have lectured him, and he just grins sheepishly. Recently I gave him my knife catalogue and told him to pick something out. He picked an extremely thick Cold Steel knife ("You sure you don't want a Spyderco?" I asked), and I bought it for him. He snapped it within a few months.

So here is my question. Is there any sort of heavy duty folder you know of, of ANY brand, that is actually decent at prying...even if you have to give up a good edge to get it? I think the edge is secondary for him. Stainless may also be secondary. It needs to be near unbreakable, that's the main thing.

Thanks for your suggestions, --Bolster

After I got my first strider I know that nothing else competes in the category you mentioned. id got for a AR/GB or a SMF.

I love my SNG.

See this.

If you manage to break that, they will just replace it. I know the knife is expensive, but the initial price will cost much less in the long run than constantly replacing knives.

or maybe a smaller fixed blade. I

Sorry, I don't know these abbreviations. For dummies, please?

AR/GB is basically the biggest, baddest Strider made. AR is a drop point blade, but GB is the tanto, and I would definitely cast my vote for a tanto. Smf and Sng's are the smaller, less ridiculous but still insanely built knives. GBs are not cheap, but they won't break either. If you can, I would definitely get one. Vincent isn't hyping Strider one bit, I have a friend who chisel bricks with his GB, and I know JimD on here has field tested his Striders plenty.

Edit: If you can go with a fixed blade, http://www.striderknives.com/index.php? ... &Itemid=26
is what you want. It's built for the sole purpose of tip strength, and it's only $50 more than a GB/AR.

Oh I cant tell ya the names, thats a secret. Go ask Jim or Worker. maybe they will tell ya but I doubt it.

The AR , GB and SNG,SMF are just the name of a knife.

The AR is a DP version of there Liner lock model

The GB is the same with a Tanto Blade.

The SNG and SMF are a Frame Lock model. I have a SNG which is a little smaller and thinner than the SMF. Id go for the SMF as its thicker.

There is also the RC but its kinda heavy and expensive

If you want to see pics of mine go to the gallery in my signature..

I am the guy who would say it, if they weren't worth there price as I can be a *** sometimes. I am 100% confident that they are worth every cent. I have the deepest gratitude to J Smith, Worker and Jimd for recommending them to me. Thank you guys so much.

I know you are talking folder but one of the badest and best and cheapest prying knives I even came across is the Fixed Bladed Glock Knife...developed for the GSG 9 Anti-Terrorist Team Unit from Austria...I bought two of these babies some 10-15 years ago...I used one as my be all and do all garage knife...I like it so much I bought two so when I destroyed the first knife I would have a replacement...well that day never came...I have used it to dig in the garden, pry open tightly sealed paint can lids, use it as a emergency tent stake...used as a throwing knife, even used it for spear fishing ...amazing knife with a $30 price tag....The Original's I have were made with Green (original Glock gun color) handles now they are still available in the color black....comes with a tie down unbreakable sheath that will clip to any belt(even a sam browne belt) and the knife must be release from the locked sheath by the wearer only...(extra security)...there are some sharp razor like (large) saw tooth serrations on the top spine great for sawing down small tree limbs....all and all it's a great knife to abuse.....Doc :D

Graham Razel is the first thing that came to my mind. Some some quite a bit cheaper than the Striders.

Well, since contractors are cheap (except when it comes to bass boats and pickup trucks) my votes are for the glock field knife (excellent choice Doc) and a countycomm 3in. or 5in. micro prybar (right tool for the job).

Knife as Prybar

#12

Post by KaliGman »

The best knife as prybar tool I have come across is made by Wilson Tactical Knives.

Check out http://www.wilsontactical.com/detail.aspx?ID=27

The Glock knife is pretty sturdy. I didn't know that the German GSG9 boys used them. I had always heard that the blade was developed for the Austrian military. In any case, the Wilson knife is an absolute beast that is designed for cutting, scraping and prying.

I'd go with what Vincent and the others said about the Strider folders; they're very, very hard to break. I've tried, and haven't succeeded yet.

Or....check out a Strider DB. Blade is about 3.5", tanto. If your buddy breaks that, he's wearing a red letter "S" on his chest. And, it's cheaper than the folders.

Now, we should all know that knife≠prybar. Why not get him an Atwood Prybaby XL?

No, they need a pry-knife, something that functions poorly as a knife or a prybar but looks neat and gives the illusion of being well prepared.

I agree with Alteran (again I think :p ) and somewhat with Vincent's most recent post
a cheap small thick fixed blade will do him better than the most expensive folder.
Jobs are so much easier when you use specialized tools. Small thick knives are making less and less sense to me (especially after having some).

Yes anson you are correct:I got a little confused... GSG 9 is a German Unit....Meant to say the Glock Knife was made for them first and then the Austrian Army....Doc :D
