Coulda' Woulda' Shoulda'
We've all had these moments. You see a discontinued Spyderco you really like, and it's in immediate abundance, and for a decent price. But for one reason or another you decide not to get it. You have the money, you know you want it, but you just can't pull the trigger. Next thing you know, it's gone, and the only place you can really find it is eBay with a price about 6 times (ok, exaggerating a little) what you could have paid for it.
The short list (because I can't remember the long one) of these knives for me is as follows:
Catcherman
Ti ATR
Spyderhawk
Pre-2005 Blue Rescue
...and a few others
I wonder, which discontinued Spydies currently in abundance will suddenly disappear and be impossible to find?

I hear ya. I haven't been at it too long, so 'history' doesn't go very far back, but for me it would be Chinook I & II, Black Yo, & Szabofly. I had lots of chances for all of them. I almost had to put the large Persian on the list but I was able to find one recently. Whew.

I've always been pretty aggressive when I saw discontinued knives that I thought were quality. I got into the Spyderco collecting a little late...after many of these were discontinued. As you can tell I'm a big fan of the Lums. These (bad) pics are from a year ago....

However, I most regret passing on a CF Walker and 25th Anniv. Delica when I had a chance. I thought they were over priced at the time. Silly me.

SEVEN blue Lums?
My history hasn't gone that far back, so I don't really have anything to regret. On that point, note to self: get a Kris.

I've let quite a few rare models like that go that I had at one point. For example, a dodo and a PE Lil' Temp. I guess I do miss that Lil' Temp but I am in love with the knives I have now so I don't really mind all too much. Oh yea and I miss my Persian a ton too.
^^
Edit: I guess this really pertain much to the thread...
I think the Kris will go out the roof in price one day.

Few Understand Spyder Fever
It's nice that we all have each other to share this obsession with :o It's getting increasingly difficult to explain my Spyder habit to people I work with, My own family ( the few that are left) and to just friends in general. No most people see our fascination for Spyders and knives in general as being borderline mentally ill. Well if that's the case then I don't even want to get well :D
But there is just something about a Spyder that no other production knife possesses.. There is a mystique about the blades with the hole opener. My late friend Charles O' Connell who just died about 2 years ago to this date got started in the hobby in February of 2005 then he unfortunately died in June of 2005. But he had already amassed 48 Spyders and climbing. I can only imagine how many he would have hoarded by now. But his obsession made mine look conservative  . I'm sure he's grinning from up above as we speak.
But the average person will never figure it out. And it's probably not meant to be figured out either. I seriously doubt if there is anything in Psychology text books that would even remotely describe Spyder fever. It's truly a phenomenon that only the infected could begin to tell you about.

Long Live the SPYDEREDGE Spyderco Hawkbills RULE!!
For me it is the large Persian. I really should have picked one up at STP when they were so cheap. I did get the Dodo at STP when they were so cheap so that is some comfort, but I should have gotten two.

a few thoughts...
Just wanted to make a small comment that if this is what our Spyder obsession looks like, then bring it on! I wouldn't be surprised if it's a touch of OCD, maybe, that brings on the Spyder fever? OTOH, it always surprises me that collecting knives is such a big deal to NKP, yet collecting firearms doesn't seem to raise an eyebrow...? :DJD Spydo wrote:It's nice that we all have each other to share this obsession with :o It's getting increasingly difficult to explain my Spyder habit to people I work with, My own family ( the few that are left) and to just friends in general. Oh yes it does. What would you think if you found out your neighbor had 30 or 40 guns in his house? Chances are you would be more understanding than most, but it wouldn't sit right with you. Now, add in two children to your family. Now how do you feel about it?OTOH, it always surprises me that collecting knives is such a big deal to NKP, yet collecting firearms doesn't seem to raise an eyebrow...?
Hoarding guns is a sign of mental derangement to a lot of people, like it or not. Joe

it depends...
You may be right and it also depends what part of the country we're talking about. A couple years ago we had a wild animal on our property, and upon hearing about it my next door neighbor helpfully got his Luger pistol and offered to take care of it, as I had a couple of frightened people in the house. Nobody batted an eyelash, because we're not anti-gun people, and guns are very commonplace out here. I have no idea how many guns my neighbor had nor does it concern me...while I was growing up, my Father carried a pistol every single day, and had and still has several guns and rifles, and carries a folding knife daily...I feel fortunate to be living in America. :DThe Mastiff wrote:Oh yes it does. Not trying to start a flame, this is just my own personal viewpoint on the matter.
