As I'm sure probably everyone new to Spyderco has done, I was reading up on the Wave, trying to figure out if it was for me. I had seen that some people had made makeshift Waves with zip-ties put through their Spyderholes, except that I didn't have any zip-ties lying around. So I used some stainless steel wire that I had lying around.

Behold, the poor man's Waved Cara Cara.

It holds in place by locking into the finger choils.

So, I just did it, and it works pretty darn well. Waved knives, even makeshift ones, are awesome! It may not work too well over the long run, but at least some good has come of it...

Now I KNOW that I simply MUST have a Waved knife!! :D

Very inventive, but it looks like it would eat pockets even faster than the regular wave :eek: :D

Not a bad idea, my only concern would be the wire sliding around. In my experience wire is a bear to get to bind to around metal. When building armatures you really need something to bind the joints such as an epoxie putty.

...and when you get tired of the wave feature you can always go back to the regular knife :D :D

Unfortunately, yablanowitz is right. Even after only a few hours of Wave Fever, I realized that I'd better take it off right now if I didn't want to ruin my pockets. (there was very little actual damage to my pockets in that small amount of time, just a large dose of realization and some pulled threads.)

But, it did sell me solidly on the idea of the Wave. I hadn't been sure before. Nothing like getting your hands on something to decide if it's right for you! :D

Exactly. I waved my Yojimbo with a zip-tie and the results are terrific. I'm hooked.

UPDATE: I found some zip-ties, and I waved my knife with one of those, seems to fix the problems that the wire had. So until further notice, I will be ZipWaved!

That's really ingenious though, I kinda like it. :cool:

As a side note: I've found the best way to stop a 'zip tie wave' from moving is t put TWO of them thru the spyderhole, with the 'lip' on each facing in different directions. Not only do they push against each other, elminating movement, but it' also creates a makeshift Cobrahood.

I am using two zip ties for waves. Works fine, not better like real thing, but at least does not damage the blade.

Yeah, I did end up puting a second zip-tie on there. The first one stops at the finger choils, and the second one makes the "Wave" far enough forward to actually catch.

One thing that I discovered is that the ZipWave doesn't work very well for catching on your back pocket (if you were, for some reason, carrying your kife in your back pocket), but the WireWave works like a dream for back pockets!

The wave is a great feature. i think that everyone should own one just to see if they like it. i remember i use to make fun of the wave before i bought one for myself.
