Forum Feature Request

I don't know how many of you use the little gray "Forums" tab at the top but I do. I use it to navigate between forums.

When you hover over it the different forums drop down. However since the addition of the picture forum, it is not on the list yet. The "Forum Jump" drop down at the very bottom right of the page is still there and works like a charm. I realize that you folks may just have tons on your plate right now and it's on "the list". No worries. ;)

I just wanted to bring it up as a suggestion if it has not already been thought about. :)

I use the same drop down at the top and noticed the new Pic forum isnt there. It would be good to have it there. Probably just missed it in the set up.

I use it all the time as well, and I've noticed that if you're at the Spyderco main page then the picture forum is on the drop down list. Probably just haven't had a chance to code it into the regular forums yet.

Ditto, I use that little list all the time. Very handy. I was actually wondering this myself a little while ago.

PM'd Kristi about this a week or so ago, she's working on it. She told their new webmaster, who then added it to the tab on the HOME page, but apparently did not realize that the FORUM HOME is a completely separate page and needed to be changed as well. She's informed him it needs to be done here too, so it should be fixed fairly soon.

I would also like to voice an issue I have. Clicking on the Spyderco banner doesn't take you to the Spyderco home page as one would expect. Instead it takes you to the forums home, drives me bananas.

P.S. I would also like to say, as a web designer, Spyderco's site is standards compliant for the most part and renders correctly in all the browsers I have access to (WIN: IE6, IE7, Firefox 1, Firefox 2, Opera 9, Netscape; OSX: Safari 2, Firefox 1, Firefox 2, Opera 9, Netscape). I really appreciate that.

Certain other manufacturer's sites ::coughbenchcoughmade:: are not standards compliant and obviously weren't tested in anything past IE6/7 and are pretty much unusable in some browsers.

I would really suggest Spyderco moves away from a table-based layout though for accessability and ease of updating.

I remember reading about a new subforum on the horizon...never noticed it until this thread. (obviously I use the save navigation as David). So thanks David Lowry, without this thread who knows how long I would have missed out... :)

Spyderco's forum is great on PIE (Pocket Internet Explorer).

As far as the rest of the site, well let's just say I was a little surprised when I ran a demo of Opera Mobile, because a LOT of new data (images, links, etc.) showed up which I had never seen on my PIE equipped Motorola Q.

Out of all the different knife related forums I have visited, this one has the best layout and is the most uncluttered.

I too, like the look of the Spyderco forum but understand the challenges of keeping the 3rd party vb software current, maintaining other 3 party mods to vb, and maintaining local modifications. The new web master will have their hands full for a while as they try to integrate the vb forums with the rest of the Spyderco site. No easy task for sure. I think it would be helpful to have a 'test drive' forum where new releases of the VB forum (with all the appropriate mods) could be tested in parallel with the current version. This would give the forum members a chance to 'have a peek' and report any issues. A real world user acceptance test prior to cutting over to current versions of the software. I'm sure the new person has their hands full with more immediate requests for things that are 'broken' and will get to these other issues in time.

Again, I think Spyderco, Kristi, the new webmaster, and the rest of the team are doing a fantastic job of keeping this site up and running.

David (and everyone else wondering), it's still on the list, but to be honest, it's low right now. We're actually working on something fairly complicated with the site currently, as soon as that is done I'll be able to move forward with this request.
