G-10 Harpy....Hmmmmmm.
G-10 Harpy....Hmmmmmm.
Fellow Spydercoians,
I've been mulling over my next prospective Spydie purchase, and I think it's probably high time I got ahold of a Harpy.
Now, some time ago I was absolutely sure that I wanted a stainless handled one (I love those S/S Spydies) but in recent weeks I've been increasingly convinced that the G-10 model is the way to go; assuming I can find one.
Opinions, to and fro?
Thanks, Jeff/1911.

Jeff,
If you can find a G10 Harpy grab it with both hands. The G10 is much more practical for the uses that the Harpy was designed for. Like the Calypso Jr this is a knife which was loved by afficionados but couldn't survive in the marketplace.

Don't worry that the world might end tomorrow, in Australia it's tomorrow already.

Fellows,
I got interested in the G-10 Harpy listening to some of you rave about it. It sounds to me like a "must-get" Spydie. I've just been looking at some pictures of this knife and decided that it will go marvelously with either my Wegner or Wegner Jr. plain edge for EDC duty, as a toothy complement.
Thanks again, Jeff.

Well, it seems that I was mislead and that the G-10 Harpy I thought I could get locally is out of stock and more money than advertised.
I am thinking about buying a S/S Harpy, at least to start with and then when I find out how wonderful they are, I'll likely be inspired to search out one in G-10.
I can't imagine not liking any stainless steel Spyderco. I simply adore them.
Jeff/1911.

Hi Jeff.
That's the way I did it. I got the SS version first, fell in love with it and then set out to find the G-10 version.
In the meantime you could try this site.

Best of luck in your search.

Hey, what up with this?
I was just looking through some images I have of various hawkbills, and I found these two pictures of the G-10 Harpy. One shows it tip down and the other tip up and I don't see that it's changeable on the handle, as some are (i.e - two sets of holes).
It must be that at different times it was produced differently. Have a look at these two images.

Jeff,
I may be wrong here but I think the first run were tip-up and used GIN-1 steel. I recall seeing one like that on KnifeCenter's web site. The later ones (like mine) are tip-down and have blades of ATS-55. They also have a steel liner to support the clip screws, which I think was absent on the first run. Can anyone confirm this?

Clay,
After reading your last post, I examined the image I have of the tip down G-10 Harpy and you can see that it says "ATS-55" on the blade. Look here for the picture in it's original form. It's quality was degraded when I resized it to fit the 400x400 limitation so I don't think was legible on the picture I posted earlier.
