More books...

#1

Post by vampyrewolf »

Well, we had an annual book sale at the mall a couple weeks ago, picked up 30 or so books for $40, got myself a nice set of programming reference books, linux/server reference.... All told about $800 worth of books. :D

had to pull 80 paperbacks off my shelf to toss the tech books on there... so I got my friend to make me a new shelf. 52"x30"x12"... figure it should be good enough for my electrical/computer books.

Just picked up 3 boxes from a guy at work today. A few years ago, one of our computer colleges shut down. One of his friends was doing the demo work and saved the books for him to pick through. He found out I have a decent library (think I'm at 260 or so), and asked if I wanted to books he still had.
Got 3 boxes, 2 of books. I've now got 3D rendering software for games (box of cd's, box of books), and a complete educators guide for C++, and a couple books on win 2K server. All told about $1K worth of package when you price out the 3D stuff. He simply wanted to get rid of the stuff that was taking up space, I think I'm getting him a case of beer now that I've looked up the price on this stuff.

The really funny thing is that I can cram 3 boxes in my car still :o

I'm sure I'm not the only one here with a decent library of thier own. I've got everything ranging from sci fi/fantasy, electrical engineering/technical reference, programming in winblows/linux, psychology, metalurgy, physics, legal reference, atomic reference, shakespeare, poe, doyle, fleming... Like I said, I'm around 260 or so.... time to make a list again.

I've got a decent library. Not as large as yours VW but quite a few books. I keep a lot of my school textbooks on my hardcore science subjects. I'm also gaining a decent sized library of "for Dummies" books as I find them to be an easy read when beginning a new topic. I've got several Chemistry books, Biology, Physics, History, several Kurt Vonnegut novels, a complete set of Mark Twain's works and a complete set of Dickens, some sci/fi and fantasy, a lot of true crime books, several by Don Robertson (my favorite author), a decent collection of classics (my mother was an English Lit major so I've gotten a lot of them for Christmas), some math books, almost all of the Calvin and Hobbes collections ever released, and two very large MCAT review books that I'm gonna have to hit very hard this summer.

ASmitty, they have a giant "all-encompassing" collection of Calvin and Hobbes available...also one with every "Far Side" cartoon ever printed!

The thing to consider when looking at the sheer mass of my collection is that I've been going for about 5yrs on it, and have put about $3K into it. I'd rather have a book with a dozen cards in it for reference points than find something in an E book (have a couple Project Gutenburg discs). Lot easier to find something in hardcopy than hunt down a bookmark on the computer (have 5 pages  )

I know that my books will be the worst thing to move when I move out. We're looking at a dozen boxes or more. ****, that 80 paperbacks took up 3 boxes. Funny thing is that the paperbacks took up 2 sections on my shelf, 2 layers deep and 2 layers high. I could fill 1/2 my shelves with tech books (which is why I got the new one built for me). I'm bad for hardcover books if I have a choice. Seen too many paperback books get ruined by bad packing.

If I had to go with a single author as a 'favorite', I'd have to say Asimov.

I've got just about all the Dune books, all the Hannibal books, a number of Clancy, Higgens...

Suweeeet and the very best of luck to you. The medical and forensic science wing of my personal library is perhaps the smallest section and fills only one 6 foot tall bookcase. It does however touch on the classics like Adams and Victor's Principles of Neurology, DeMaio's excellent Gunshot Wounds, several editions of Mercks, and an equal number of dog-eared Tabors. Last time the AF moved me, I was allowed 12,500 lbs of stuff. There was no room for furniture, appliances, clothing, or power tools after books, bicyles, and scuba gear were packed. The printed word carries a lot of weight in Java's house......maybe too much. :o

Zen,
Why does it not surprise me you'd have thoroughly reserached the complete unabridged volumes of Calvin and Hobbes and The Far Side. I'm stunned Bloom County has not been given the same scrutiny.....mft....Ack!!

VW,
If you don't already have it, I highly recommend a copy of the CRC and IEEE Press' The Electronics Handbook.

I have the entire Bloom County collection, along with the first couple of Outlands books.

When Bloom County left the comic pages, so did I. :(

My good Doctor,

Am I correct to assume you have the Billy and the Boingers Bootleg complete with the vinyl disc that came inside the book????? (It sounds like Bill looks...Pbthhht....Ack!)

I too miss the topical humor of Bloom County, Larsen's twisted Far Side take on life, and B. Klban's warped world of Cats. Good to hear you appreciate Berke Breathed's particular strain of humor but nearly 18 years away from the comics, I fear, will drive a man mad. ;)

Books are my main passion. I have well over 2,000 -- most of them in a wall-to-wall library in my house (which is now completely full!:eek :) , and the rest in a few make-shift bookcases scattered throughout the house. I collect mostly 20th century fiction. A lot are first editions, some of them signed. Favorite authors include Hubert Selby, Norman Mailer, John Hawkes, John Fowles, John Gardner, Will Christopher Baer, Craig Clevenger, Stephen Graham Jones, James Ellroy, Jim Thomspon, Rupert Thomson, Jack O'Connel, William S Burroughs, books on Bob Dylan, and over 80 books on the JFK assassination.

And of course, some books on knives. :D

Still looking for a first edition of The Spyderco Story.

Oh the conversation you and my dad would be able to have. He's got the largest collection of Kennedy assassination books I've personally seen. Don't know if it's over 80 but he has a lot of them.

that's cool. i don't know anyone else who collects books on the kennedy assasination, but based on the THOUSANDS of books on the topic, i figure i can't be the only one!

heheh... finally got my tech/resource book shelf loaded... made room on my main shelf to put my paperbacks back.

Well, final count:
146 on main shelf
85 on tech/reference
68 in 2 boxes to go on a garage sale...

All told 231 on my shelves, 299 in current collection

And that's not counting the 3 binders of comics, the stack beside them of aviation and blade mags, my father's old shakespeare books from his highschool english class, the older comics, the box of old asimov sci fi mags.... or my 2feet worth of binders from my course(that I plan to get scanned and tossed on my external 320gb HD).

I need another shelf still...

Garage sale on May long weekend is our usual huge family one. Who knows how many of the books I'm taking sell, or how many I bring home from relative's collections. The only thing I buy at garage sales is books.

great collection, fairbrook!

I tried librarything, but I like Shelfari better.

Here is my Shelfari page -- this is by no means complete, but its a start. I actually catalog my collection in a database called Book Collector from collectorz.com.
