30 degree angle on 204 for para milly?

The scary sharp edge on the para milly out of the box looks to me to be at thirty degrees instead of forty.? If I want to maintain the scary sharp edge, would i be better off using the 30 degree angle on the 204 instead of the 40?
Note: I also have a pair of the ultra fine stones.

thanks

Go to the Chris Reeve Knife Site. They make $500 pocket folders and recommend a 40 degree edge for their knives: case closed.

That is some flawed logic there

I think I will stick with Sal's recomendation of 30 degrees :spyder:

My thoughts too... just because they're expensive doesn't mean they have the best blade angles. 30 degrees is what I run on the Yojimbo, and my Para, but I guess if you want the usable edge to last longer between sharpenings you *could* go to 40. 30 works great for me, and s30v is plenty wear resistant to run the thinner edge, and still take a while between sharpenings.

Actually, it should have better edge retention at 30 than at 40. That isn't the traditional view of edge retention, but a lot of people have proven that acute edges will have better edge retention than more obtuse ones, assuming the steel can handle the thinner angle.

30 degrees. S30V is strong enough to handle a more acute edge angle under normal usage (a very broad range, BTW) and it's pretty easy to maintain that edge with the Sharpmaker.

At least, that's what I do with my PM and I've had no edge problems or sharpening problems. The PM is what I usually carry when I'm not at work, so it sees a good bit of use.

CRS, I think you'll do just fine at 30 degrees. I don't have a para but I do have the millie (tomorrow may be the day I can add one more :) ) and I believe it came narrower than 30 degrees out of the box. It has only needed the occasional touch up.

Some folks like 40 degrees as they find it works well for them, to each their own. Not to argue, but despite what CRK recomends, I run all my CRK's at 30 degrees as well and am quite happy with edge retention and cutting ability. Best of luck.

From this and past threads, I've gotten the idea that 15 per side/30 inclusive is preferred for S30V and ZDP189. What about VG10? Can it handle 15/30 as well? Or does it need 20/40?

VG10 works very well at 15 per side. I sharpen all of my knives at 15 per side.
154CM,VG10, S30v and the good ole carbon steel blades.

VG-10 handles 15 per side with ease. I actually go much thinner on all of those steels (10 per side or less with a 15), especially the ZDP.
