T-Mag: There's not much excitement about!

#1

Post by Effigy »

I was surprised to hear that the T-Mag is starting to ship, as there doesn't appear to be the usual hype and discussion on the boards about it.

I'm awaiting mine, but since I got to handle one, I can't say I'm too excited about this little puppy :(

What's your view?

For me, it just seems gimmicky, so I'm really not all that excited about it. I'm interested in reading reviews once people begin to receive them, but I'm pretty certain I won't be buying one. If I want a locking knife, I want it to actually lock. If I don't want a lock, a slip-joint is perfectly sufficient.

Does seem like a fairly expensive platform to use for a "gimmick" knife.

I don't get it at all. I brought this up at one point and didn't get a single concrete reason why it was an advantage - just "it's cool because it's different". Which is great if you're a collector, I suppose, but if you actually use the things it's not too compelling.

I'd like to add that, while this knife doesn't really appeal to me, I still applaud Spyderco for its continuing efforts towards innovation and improvement. At a time when certain other manufactures seem to be stagnant and complacent, It's very encouraging to see Spyderco pushing forward. Keep up the good work. :)

I'm just not interested in it really. Plus I would constantly be thinking about metal shavings or other metal objects sticking to the magnetic part.

I also don't care for the look of the blade. Just not my bag. :)

I am really looking forward to reading reviews & seeing detailed pictures of the T-mag. I am a huge fan of the UKPK and I would like to find out how this knife compares. I know that I like the size/material of its handle, size/material of its blade, and wire clip. However, I'm not sure about whether I will like the shape of the blade and the magnetic lock.

So far, I don't have enough info about the knife to get me to cough up ~150 bucks. Only time will tell.

Ahh Good point, I'll try to keep my iron cutting down to a minimum...

:D

I'm excited by it, but I haven't had the benefit of a preview such as by the OP. Does this make me a collector or a simpleton, who is easily duped by gimmicks?

I doubt it.

I haven't handled one, but from what I've read I can't figure out how this knife has any advantage over a well made slip joint. I also wonder, like David Lowry, about the magnet interacting with other things in my environment, like the annoyance of sticking to every metal desk or file cabinet I happen to lean on, and corrupting some forms of digital media.

i'm on a waiting list for the t-mag. i can't wait! i like the look, and i'm definitely in it for the "gimmick" factor. magnets are cool, its as simple as that.

i sort-of expect this knife not to make much of a splash in the marketplace, but to become a hot collectable in years to come.

it's a good example of spyderco doing something different and innovative just because they want to challenge the knife world, not because they want to make an easy dollar.

Thanks clovisc! My thoughts exactly. ;)
Maybe it will go the way of the Zowada, few made, bad seller, disco'd.
Then in a few years, EVERYONE and their pet poodle will want one! Let the bidding wars begin. :p :D :D
It's destined to be a classic, no matter what anybody say's about it. ;) ;)
Way to go Spyderco, I love you guy's!! ;) :D

Well, sure, but usually they do a great job of explaining why they're making a change or introducing some new material or whatever. This one's just kind of puzzling, to me anyway.

It's something new. I'm interested if only for that reason. Will I carry it? Sure, if only to demagnetize my credit cards :p Yes I know it's not supposed to, but it would be nice to keep myself from spending money

I got to handle one at the blade show last year, and I think it's a neat knife.

I'd like to have one, but I won't pay $150 for a knife I won't use, I prefer a locking knife.

Now if you combine the rare earth magnet with the ball-lock, we would really be talking there!

If I recall correctly, the primary explanation was that Sal likes magnets. ;)

Was not aware of a large-scale movement to bring back the Zowada. Frankly I have a hunch that if someone were to post a source that had 200 of them and was offering them at MSRP, two weeks later that source would still have over 190 of them.
fellyjr wrote:It's destined to be a classic, no matter what anybody say's about it. ]I agree. The T-Mag may very well be a smart move on Sal's part too. It's a "world knife" that may sell well in places where the carrying of locking folders is already banned and a hedge against the possibility of legislation to ban or severely restrict the carrying of them here in the USA.
