Sal etc,
"The civilian model is the first of several folding knives designed and produced only as a law enforcement back-up defence weapon."
that was a quote from the lil bit of paper that came with my civilian, what are these other "several" knives you talk of? any chance of some info? will there be any in the 2002 line up? in my view the carbon fiber civilian is the best knife spyderco make.

More civilian questions:
Why the shape? What advantage (other than looking scary) does the blade have over any other knife? The tip isn't used for stabbing so would seem to give less options and it looks as though it might hook in clothing increasing the risk of losing it.
Can someone explain the rationale.

mattress - its a law enforcement back up weapon, note weapon as opposed to tool, this makes it unlike any other spyderco knife, the tip is harder than it looks but still very fragile, which is why it cannot be used as a utility knife, in fact if it is used as a utility knife, it voids the warranty. the blade is designed to slash only, i tested it on some foam up against my harpy and my police, it really does the job, i wouldn't want to be on the recieving end of one of these little puppies and i'd be VERY suprised if the tip broke off on clothing, bone maybe but not clothes.
Knife Knut - i got mine in america actually, it was on sale in a knife shop in san francisco umm about 190 i think, i've never handled a G-10 version but the carbon fiber one is smooth on both sides like stainless steel, no texturing at all, i remember a topic about the possibility of a stainless steel civvie a while back, it was "decided" that it would be to slippy and therefore suck at what its for, wouldn't want it slipping outta ya hand when it got bloody now would we, but if like the majority of us your don't actually need to kill anybody with it its great, the carbon fiber is a limeted edition too, i think they only made 500, 245 serrated 245 plain edged 25 serrated left handed and 25 plain edged left handed, i could be thinking of something else tho
phew, type an essay why don't i? best bne getting back to my homework now

To reiterate what Ruxton said, "the Civilian is a weapon, not a tool". I personally observed the Civilian in action, where it was used to control an assailant.
It was an expert's way of using non-lethal force, while under attack from a highly intoxicated individual.
Be aware that even if you are in law enforcement, the design of this knife is so fearsome, that you will be in for the hassle of your life, from the legal system.
While the Carbon Fiber is beautiful, it doesn't handle as well as the G-10.
There is a smaller knife with a similar design called the Matriarch.
One way or the other, you pay for your tools!

yeah gadfly is right IMO the CF civilian is more of a show peice, if you are actually using it for its real purpose the G-10 has better grip.
i think i read somewhere that the matriarch is basically a civilian except with cheaper (but just as good) zytel handles and a slightly shorter and less curved blade, i read that they were made for south african police issue... i could be totally wrong, anybody know about this?

PS i read somewhere that civvies were introduced in 1997 (god knows where i get these figures from, i probably dreamed that ) so were any of these several other knives introduced in the past 4 years?
