How would the Millie or PMillie fare as a SD knife?

14mm hole, G10, flat-ground.......?

it'd fare fine

it just wouldn't look in court if you end up actually using it for that purpose in a SD-situation.

these knives almost scream "tactical knife of mass-destruction!"

i gave this very issue some serious thought last night, and decided to edc Dragonflies from now on ;)

I think any Spyderco knife will fare well as an SD knife. There are better tools for self defense, but in a bind, or with proper training, any Spyderco could do some damage.

just felt like adding some extra info Garageboy, don't want you to get in trouble, nor any other forumites reading this....

a few years ago there was a tread on BF about a guy with a Millie defending himself while he got jumped by two thugs in a parking lot. he stabbed one of them five times, and the thug died.

the event made the local media, and the whole thing, what else, went into court. the defendant got a guilty-verdict, since he used unnecessary lethal force which led to the passing of the thug

and, take note on this one: the fact that the defendant was carrying a 4" one-hander with the word "Military" on the blade WAS used against him by the accusation. i'm not certain, but i remember the guy also had a couple of beers down the hatch, but, he was just 'minding his own busines', walking to his car to go home

he might have gotten better off had he been packing an engraved SS Delica and slashed the thug a few times in the face for instance, and then ran for it.

the guy went to jail for using overkill lethal force in self-defense.

be smart, pack small, and only use the force needed to make it out alive, no more.

stay safe GB and others,

i carry both my military and para in NYC all the time, Ive never had to use them as I am quite big and most people know just not to mess with me. But even though there are always idiots, and It has happened to me before when I was in HS. One day on the bus to school I had been confronted by 3 black kids who wanted to take my iPod. i didn't have a knife but had to fight 2 of them and the other one just stood back and watched. If I had a knife I probably would have pulled it, something as a simple pulling a knife or any weapon could avoid the entire fight. though as mentioned above actually using a knife when the other person doesn't have a weapon is not really worth it.

Stabbing somebody 5 times is insane, one slash on the arm is good enogh to create some damage but not to kill them.

It will work but is not ideal. If you want to carry a 4 inch folder with the purpose of self defense, I'de consider a Civilian. Both a Military and Civilian will not fare well in court, but the Civilian is a knife that can avoid a confrontation with deterrence and if used correctly is effective non-lethal force.

Caution!
A lucky/unlucky slash to a brachial artery in the upper arm will bleed a person out pretty quickly. A radial artery hit would not be as bad-but a trip to the ER would be needed ASAP.So one may still have to lawyer up even with a slashing defense. I still would rather be judged than carried!

Id probably always fight before I used a knife, though if ya had to do some hard but not kill, what is the best.

This seems a good time to release Jordan's Secret Knife Self Defense Quantification.

so is it better to use say a slash to the face or the one hit kill .i thought the way it went was when theres only one story than who's to argue? best run if you can .ain't worth a meating with bubba in the back room cause if you go to jail your knife is gone and no matter how big or tough you are there is some one worst and they might be lonely :p Meet force with equal force and some times you'll still be screwed. You have to judge the worth of the situation. Unless my wife or baby's are endanger i'm running. Carry a gun at least you can say i don't know it just went off :D :D HA HA !!!!!

Both would work just fine for a "folding fighting knife."

I prefer the Para Military, it just seems to move better for me. Although I would not feel naked in a fight with the Military. :)

Ahh a vintage thread aged to perfection.

My guess is a defense designed knife would work sufficiently assuming every other dark and mysterious variable fell in your favor.

The matriarch 2 is good for SD as it is specified for that. A smaller and cheaper version of the civilian. Also remember that with any knife comes great responsibility. Be aware of your SD options and local laws. Most of all, keep a cool head.

If I am made to choose between parting with my wallet or drawing my knife, I will part with my wallet any time. But if I was to chose between losing my life and using my knife, it will be the latter.

Good first post and welcome to the forum.

In the right hands any knife is an SD solution but is the ideal SD tool i don't think so. The Millie and PM are capable of getting you out of a nasty situation, that is sure even for an unexpierenced user, a civilian and a matriarch on the other hand is another cup of tea, you should have some experience with this style of knives, they cut in 2 planes and when you are not fully confident with this knife behaviour you can easily end up cutting yourself. Most people are used to work a knife in one dimension and this is where the civi goes unconventional. I would never carry my Civi or Matriarch instead I rely on my PM2
