I finally needed to sharpen the blade on my combo edged D4 this evening. The plain portion was starting to roll a little and needed a touch up. Well out comes the 204 and the white stones set at 30 degrees for a quick touch up. No such luck. After trying a couple different combinations of stones and angles with out good results I pull out a sharpie and mark the edge on both sides of the blade. Well (looking down from the spine) the right edge is 30 degrees, a couple passes on the 204 cleanly remove all the marker ink. The left side though is actually steeper than 40 degrees, when making passes at 40 degrees only a little ink at the top of the grind is removed (ie: most of the grind starting at the leading edge is still covered in blue ink). Looking at the tip of the blade I think I can see the difference between the two sides.
This is new to me on Spydercos, up until now they have always very well ground especially for mass produced knives. Has anyone else experienced this? I am starting to re-profile the edge back to 30 degrees, but it will take awhile especially since I want to cut back the right side too so that each side mirrors the other (I don’t want a tanto proportioned edge).

I don't know the actual angles since I sharpen freehand, but when I got my BGCF Military, the edge bevel on the front (left) side of the blade was at least twice the width of the bevel on the back (right) side. It still cut just fine. It did take a little time on the diamond bechstone to even out, but I had to take the chips out of the edge anyway, so...
I seem to recall Sal saying the final grind is done by hand, so it can vary a bit from knife to knife.

I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.
