Attention Aikidoists (SOMEWHAT GRAPHIC PICTURE)

For any still wondering about the importance of proper ukemi, I've got 10 good reasons to get good at it right here...

...well, at the moment I only have nine good ones :(
Image
My ukemi has been terrible the past few days, and didn't put enough time into fixing it (or put too much thought into fixing it!) Yep, it's broken. That's bad, but what's good is that it wasn't my ankle!

Rub some butter on it.

Yeow! Very glad it wasn't your ankle! How long before it's fully healed?

Ukemi is how to fall, right?

While I was practicing Judo in an other life, I threw someone with a morote sawanage and he rolled, but not his big toe didn't. It got cought between tatamis.

First time in my life I saw a bone sticking out of someone.

Sorry, no pictures ;)

Paul, ukemi is basically the technique of falling. Instead of lying down like a pancake, your body is taught to roll and expire during impact. Much of the shock can be absorbed by properly kicking the ground with the arm. Learning it in the dojo is easier than it seems. But becoming a reflex, that takes longer...
The mind commands the body and it obeys. The mind orders itself and meets resistance.

Hi Jeff, sorry that I can't congratulate you for the great pic. :o But I wish you safe recovery. Take care.

Many thanks for all the wellwishes!

My guess is I'm gonna be babying this for about 4-6 weeks as usual (I've broken 3 other toes before, but this is the first time during Aikido). It's bigger and purpler now, but that happens. Doesn't hurt at all unless somebody steps on it  Every now and then I have to eat a little humble pie to help straighten out my priorities.

Ukemi as I have learned it is actually any form of harm-avoiding breakfall whether it be a roll, a proper fall, or even swallowing pride in order to help end an argument on a positive note. Yes, it has been well-addressed in prior posts, but few think of ukemi outside of it's physical context.

Michael, I was going to ask how you knew it was VINYL mats until I remembered you're a Shodan. You've probably trained on about everything by now... Is this a problem common to vinyl mats???

:spyder: I've seen a few toes get broken on vinyl mats;vinyl really grabs the toes. On the other side canvas mats make a lot of dust. :spyder:

I'll probably be drawn and quartered for this, but I haven't seen any of Akira Kurosawa's work yet :( I still got a pretty good laugh out of it, though! :D Thanks, Captain!
