My Take on the Spin and C4

#1

Post by waredbear »

Well my time with these two knives from the Blade Forum passaround is coming to an end. I will place them in the mail tomorrow to the next tester.

I didn't put them through a lot of tests but Ron and I did fend off a few cardboard boxes over the last two weeks. We wonder what the people are thinking when they get the parts and the lids of the boxes are all cut up. As always...the sharpness of a Spydie is never in question.

Right off the bat the Spin didn't do anything for me. It was too small for my hand, didn't feel right, and was clumsy to use. Everybody seems to love this little thing and hate the C4...me I didn't like the Spin and DID like the C4. (see the blade forums passaround) I am able to open the Spin with one hand which is hard for me to do on most Spydies. I like to FLIP them open for use. Once opened I would slide it into my hand, grab it, and it felt like it was going to pop right out of my hand. I kept wanting to move my hand up onto the blade to get a better grip. I didn't do much cutting with it because of this awkward feel. I also don't like the smooth metal sides because they scratch too easy. I had this same complaint with the Lava. I never carried the Spin with the clip. I always dropped it all the way down into my pocket and carried the C4 in the at-the-ready position.

When RonT first introduced me to Spydies I thought they were ugly because of their shapes and with that huge hole in the blade. Wellllllll Lukily I can still type with my foot in my mouth...I have to eat those feelings because Spydies have proven that they were designed for a specific purpose and the hole is...well...perfect for opening...once you get used to using it. But I will have to say that I haven't found a use for the Spin. Maybe for a first blade for a kid or for the ladies with their small hands...but for me....NO USE!!!! :( Sorry Sal.

The C4 on the other hand was a delight to use. I did change the clip so that it is a tip up right hand opener. I used to be a tip down kind of guy but RonT and my Salsa have converted me over to the tip up carry. Again...I wasn't too keen on the looks of the knife but I came around to the usefulness of the blades shape...even though RonT didn't. The knife feels real good in the hand and I had no problem defending off all the attacking cardboard boxes. RonT doesn't like the feel of the smooth handle...he is a rough and tough G10 kind of guy. Again the tip was very usefull in opening and cutting boxes. The thinness of the blade also didn't bother me. I didn't use it for any heavy duty cutting or chopping but it did perform as expected for my daily type of use.

My final thoughts:
Spin :(
C4 :)

Nice review waredbear......yeah the Spin is a pretty tiny knife .....sorta stuck between a SS Jester and SS Cricket....I can see how this knife can be too small for someone with bigger hands....Glad you liked the Cento4, however; It and the Centofante 3 have been been stellar perfomers for a Wally-Native price!
