MBC 2002 Class Dates

#1

Post by Michael Janich »

To all MBC forumites:

The class dates for the first six months of 2002 have been confirmed. They are as follows:

19-20 January, Levels 1-2

16-17 March, Levels 3-4

11-12 May, Levels 1-2

Further information on the curriculum for the various levels is available in the "recent news" section of the Spyderco home page. Class dates for the second half of 2002 will be posted when they become available.

Also, there are still a few openings for the 20-21 October 2001 Level 1 and Level 2 classes.

Thanks to everyone for your continued interest in MBC and our efforts to provide responsible, professional edged-weapon training.

Stay safe,

mike j

When is the last snow in the Golden area? I have been toying with the idea of a pilgramage to visit Spyderco and take a level 1 course. To save money I would be camping, but I have no experience camping in the snow.

Knife Knut on a shoestring budget.

Dear Knife Knut:

Thanks for your reply.

May would probably be the best bet if you plan to camp, but please bear in mind that there are no guarantees on Colorado weather.

I'm working on dates for the second half of 2002 and hope to have them posted soon. The basic idea is to run a class every two months, starting with January. As such, anticipate seeing dates for July, September, and November as well. Those might work better for your needs.

Another money-saving idea might be to solicit interest from other forumites with regard to sharing a hotel room. If you can coordinate well with someone else, you can cut your lodging cost in half.

Stay safe,

Mr Janich,

Just out of curiosity, how did last year's, last minute combined classes, #1-4, work out?
Too much material to cover over 4 consecutive
days? Any thought of doing it this year?
Thanks for your time.

Dear Mike:

Sorry for the slow reply - I missed your question the first time around.

We never did a Level 1-4, but did organize a last-minute 1-3 that worked pretty well. For folks traveling a long way, the idea of three straight days of training makes the expense and hassle of travel easier to bear. However, you also have to be motivated enough to hang through three days of activity.

At present, we don't have any classes scheduled that way for 2002, but we're working on the second half of the year. If anyone would be interested in the 1-3, back-to-back concept, please say so on the forum (it's easier to track than calling in to Spyderco). If the interest is there, Spyderco and I will be there too.

Stay safe,

I would also be there, Mr. Janich! Just say when & where & how much it'll cost, please. I haven't had a vacation in almost 2 years....yes, I definitely would consider it a vacation. Knowing how much I like knives and all....

Mike, do you know of any MBC style classes that are organised by reputable individuals or organisations in the Australasian or Asian region? The problem is that many of us living on the other side of the world would find it difficult to fly halfway around the globe to attend MBC training at Colorado. Thanks.

Dear Hy:

Geoff Todd of New Zealand (editor of Australasian Martial Arts magazine) offers some good close-combat training, however, his instruction in knife is geared more toward military application and is, in my opinion, a bit antiquated.

Other than Geoff and looking for a good teacher in the Filipino or Indonesian arts, I really can't recommend much.

Perhaps if you could get enough interest going on that side of the world, I could bring MBC to you. Spyderco has decided to support out-of-town MBC classes, but the bulk of the planning effort fall on me. As such, although I am willing to travel and teach MBC on the road, I must make sure that the support is there to make the effort worthwhile.

Anyone interested in organizing an MBC course in your area, please e-mail me directly and we can discuss it.

Good luck and stay safe,

mike j
