What's your job???

#1

Post by ASmitty »

So, I posted a thread recently looking for people on this forum who are in the career I'm going to school for and dedguy posted a thread recently regarding what he does for a living and I thought, "Gee, it would be interesting to find out what some of the others here do for a living."

So, if you read my thread you'll know that I'm in school to be a Podiatrist. That's a doctor of the foot and ankle if you did not know. Now, unlike other medical specialists a podiatrist is not an MD who has specialized in Podiatry. It is actually a completely separate degree program. That doesn't mean that the education is less rigorous as a Pod. does need to know all of the same things any other physician does, in fact, the program I want to attend is actually integrated into a medical school so that you are taking your clinical sciences with the general medical students.

So, what do the rest of you do for a job?

I'm an 38 year young Engineer/Technician in the semicon industrie.
In plane language I make, design, build and debug steel moulds dies and tools for the chip industrie.
The moulds that make the black package around a chip (encapcelation).
We do this for customers all over the world also in the US.
Next to that we also do micro repairs and reworks of older moulds.
With repair I mean thing as Laserwelding, grinding, High speed milling, EDM, wire EDM, lapping and polishing.
Due to the fact that I work a lot with tool steels I have become interested in knives some years ago.
So steel runs through the veins, just as the knife virus :D

I'm an electrical engineer in the power industry, power transmission and distribution to be precise. I wear a lot of hats at our utility. Power doesn't really have a lot of young engineers going into it. I enjoy what I do because it's not an all-time office job, and things are always changing. Downsides are relatively crappy pay in my area (non-union in a union shop, some politics), and the disdain of the general public in regards to utility workers (at least here). People really take the nation's relatively old power system for granted, but life when the power is out really sucks. Electricity is cheap here, < $.07 per kwh for residential, best bargain around IMO. Gotta go build some power lines...

I'm 33 and a Network Analyst for a large hospital.

Myself and 4 other guys maintain about 110 Windows/Linux/Novell/AIX servers. We build and rack new ones as needed. We also manage and install all the Cisco routers, switches, etc. We have 6 different locations currently within a 20 mile radius. We do wireless (802.11 a/b/g) throughout the campus and also offer "guest" access to the Internet. I'm an MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) and I also have a Linux+ certification.

I have a fun job and it used to be my hobby so I can't complain. I get paid to do what I like. :)

I'm a senior in high school. I work part time in theatres both for pay and as community service. I also do odd manual labor when the opportunity arises. I'd like to get a job at my local knife store (and maybe influence their orders ;) ) but I can't untill I turn eighteen in December.
Ask me where I got my awesome SUPERHAWK!

More like Mid-Cal now

I am a grad student at Johns Hopkins pursuing a Ph.D in Philosophy. Fortunately, I get full tuition remission via Fellowship and T.A.ship (I don't pay anything) for 6 years, plus an annual stipend to live on. I hope to secure a professor position at a University upon receiving the Ph.D.
Being a graduate student has its advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages:
1. I get to think, read, write, and talk about my academic interests and get paid for it in the process.
2. I have a light courseload, so I have free time. (only 9 credits a semester)
3. I have nearly unlimited academic resources at an elite institution like Hopkins.
Disadvantages:
1. Modest stipend.
2. Baltimore is a dangerous city.
3. Pressure to publish in the academic journals so as to increase prospects in academia.
On the whole, I love what I'm doing, and wouldn't trade it for any other profession. Hopefully, I will be able to get a job at a University that I like, and in a favorable geographic region.

I'm a computer programmer and systems analyst, or to be more specific a database applications developer. I work for the New York State Attorney General's Office. For those into such things, our current toolset is Oracle Designer and Developer, but we are in the very early stages of migrating to Oracle jDeveloper. As a result, I'm back in college trying to learn Java, as my 60+ year old brain is balking a bit at making the transition from the procedural languages I've been using for twenty odd years to an object oriented one.

Im a seventeen year old Junior in highschool. My job includes no more than trash, emptying dishwasher, and trying to handle 2 AP classes ontop of my normal classes. I would love to get a job to fund my love of spydies among other things, but AP classes take up a nice chunk of time as it is so Im not sure if it is possible....
