Ayoob and Chinook Questions

#1

Post by Ryan L. »

I am a newbie here, though I've been lurking for some time. I'm considering buying an Ayoob model, though have slight reservation about the almite coating being too slippery? Is there any chance of a G-10 handle in the future?

Also, is there chance of a Chinook model with a reversible clip coming out in the near future? I'm a lefty and am trying to see what all options are available.

Thanks,

Ryan

RE: the Ayoob & Almite

I find that the pistol-grip design of the Ayoob means that the relatively slippery qualities of Almite don't make much difference. If you hold the knife in a saber grip with your thumb against the hump at the base of the spine then I've found that even when my hands are slick the knife won't budge.

However, over all I'm not impressed with the Almite finish. Initially I thought: at least it's pretty, and it's supposed to be durable. However, so far it's looks haven't lasted because I've found that it does not wear well at the edges of the handle: sliver outlines are appearing and a couple of scratches, very noticeable against the black of the rest of the almite.

If the Ayoob ever appears with a different handle material then I'd definily switch over, because other than this it's a fabulous knife.

Ryan, IMO the design of the Ayoob's handle offset the "slipperiness" that some people ascribe to the almite coating. However, if you'll be predominantly using the knife under wet conditions, you might want to try adding strips of "grip" tape (used on stairs?) for extra measure. I have never tried this but read where some posters had satisfactory results with this idea. The Ayoob is a very handy utility knife that looks more like a fishing knife than a tactical tool. I hope this helps.
