Tip up or Tip down?

#1

Post by Puyallupknifegu »

Hello Everyone!!!

I think this will be an "age old" debate...however, I am curious:

Tip up or Tip down, and why or why not? Which carrry method is faster to deploy?

Thanks and let's all have some fun today!!! :D
God bless!

It doesn't really matter to me, I carry some of my knives tip up, but my current EDC is tip down. It could have been tip up as well, but it seems to me tip down is a wee bit faster to deploy.

Some tip-up folders with thumb-studs may tend to inadvertently open - or partially open - on draw, due to catching the thumb-stud on the edge of your pocket when drawing the folder.

This has happened several times with my Strider SMF, and also with my Buck/Strider Tarani. Obviously, it never happens with my Spydercos.

Depends somewhat on your level of activity too. In the "old days" Spyderco warned skydivers to rubber-band the blade on tip up models to avoid the risk of in-pocket opening. I would suggest if your lifestyle involves the occasional jump off a loading dock, porch, or the bed of a pick-up, that tip down might be the more sensible mode. For myself, I normally remove the clips from my EDC Spydercos and carry them loose in my rear pocket. No problems that way with clips damaging furniture, walls or vehicles. Far less risk of damaging the clip or losing the knife. Granted, it's not great for quick draw, but I don't carry a knife for SD, so that's not a problem.

Or to keep your pivot relatively tight. I carry tip up, but I'm pretty I keep my pivots much tighter than most. Tip down is safer, but I stil prefer tip up for comfort/ease of use. I had my Dodo open up in my back pocket after jumping off the loading dock one time a while back. Didn't notice right away, but about ten minutes later something felt "wrong" so I checked, and it was open and locked in my pocket. I tightened the pivot later that night, as well as those on the rest of my knives. Haven't had that problem since.

If I can flick it open easily, it's too loose for me.

Tip down for me because that is the only way a clipit came in the old days. Old dog and all that. I would advise that if your carry is in any way related to defense that you pick one method and stick to it. Nothing like trying to "draw" under pressure only to fumble around because the flavor of the day is in the opposite direction from what your muscle memory "remembers".

I strongly prefer tip down, but for two days I've been going tip up with my Lil Temp.

As much as I would rather have it tip down, the horns exposed out of pocket were getting banged up, and caught on stuff at work. Not so cool. So I'm going tip up to see how I like it, or I may just carry a different one on the job.
