Question about blade blackening
Question about blade blackening
Does Spyderco recommend a certain method for aftermarket blackening of blades? I'm thinking about doing this to a waved Delica soon, if it isn't too difficult to do. Even a certain type of spray paint would be acceptable if it didn't damage the finish. Also, are there any new plans for a black bladed version of the Delica/Endura 4?

Coated blades are simple a matter of taste, not necessarily attempts to be a mall ninja.
Personally, I only like a coating on my blades if the steel is prone to corrosion(10XX steels, low carbon tool steels)
Other than that, I have no need for them. The coatings are typically bonded to the steel, and paint will come off faster than it takes for the paint to dry.
There are companies that will coat the blade for you, but I don't know the names or contact information for them. Sorry.

Dodge has used a blueing on the clip of one of his knives. There are methods for blueing, and there is also a Bodycoat (?).
You could check at USN where pimpers seem to abound. Someone over there coated a blade I believe.

First they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not stand up, because I was not a Trade Unionist.

That reminds me, CKE did a coated blade a while back, might want to ask him what he used, or what company did the work.ghostrider wrote:You could check at USN where pimpers seem to abound. Someone over there coated a blade I believe.

just a fyi. read the labels on that naval jelly. it states it causes cancer in lab rats, unless they changed the ingredients since i last bought it.shao.fu.tzer wrote:You could produce a black-ish patina that will inhibit corrosion by dipping the blade in Naval Jelly (rust remover containing phosphoric acid).

Personally I've never owned a black blade that I liked. They look great until you use them and then its just terrible looking.

I thought of doing the same thing once. The problem is in the properties of the stainless steel. It makes it pretty expensive to do for a single application, or even several.
https://ecommerce.epi.com/cgi-bin/Comme ... =IB-SS3701
This site seemed to have the best treatment for stainless, but as you ca see it is sold by the gallon and not inexpensive.
What I did find that I thought my be workable is having a blade coated at a site such as this one
http://www.mrarms.com/gallery.html
If you look at the bottom of the page you'll see an example of a CRKT that was done in bronze Dimondkoat.
Most of these coatings are for guns and won't be permanent but should last a while.
Another source might be at

hope this helps
