Belated IWA 2006 Show Report

#1

Post by Mr Blonde »

This was way overdue, but with my website being down, that took precedence. I finally got around to sorting out the pics.

It was ultimately cool to be invited by the good people of Spyderco. And with passes ready to go, thank you Joyce(!), we were swiftly whisked through the entrance, while everyone else was still filling out forms. Again, very cool.

I was a first time visitor and very overwhelmed. The IWA show is huge! I’m sure I didn’t see half the booths, but not that I feel I ‘missed’ anything. Playing with guns, scopes, lasers, binoculars, knives and night-vision equipment for two solid days…I felt like the proverbial kid in the candy store.

Image
Even though it was March, there was still plenty of snow around Nuremberg, Germany.

Image
Underway to the IWA show, the anticipation rises! Fortunately the electronic signs made sure we found our way the first time.

Of course, the first thing we did, was finding the Spyderco booth. Once we found it, we were welcomed like family. It was still early and not too many people were at the show. Of course I wanted to talk to everyone there, but I also recognized that for the spydercrew it’s all business. Once real guests (businesspeople and writers) showed up, we made sure to get out of the way. I still got plenty of one-on-one time with most though. I saw some new protos that were not at the Amsterdam show. I must say, I was very pleasantly surprised!!

The Spyderco booth was constantly busy, lots of people stopping and talking.

A detail of the exhibit. Those plexiglas bug logos sure would look great in my collection. Oh wait, I already had one! ;-)

The first of a few shots of the display at the show. This of course is the display case without the prototypes.

I did manage to purchase a Yellow Salt I SE. Nothing special I guess, but it did make for a nice souvenir. Another one to cross out from the wish list.

I got a chance to play some more with the upcoming Turquoise Kopa. It doesn’t make the wait any easier.

And some models we all know already. In all, it was a great experience. I think I left with about 10kg of catalogs, patches and brochures. I only asked for half of that mind you. Thanks Joyce, for inviting us on behalf of the whole spydercrew. We had a wonderful time and I will certainly be there next year.

Thanks for the review, and for the pictures! It makes you want to go to the next one! :D

(I was just checking out the flights to Atlanta for Blade 2006, but I dont know how to even raise the subject with my wife!) :(

Is the IWA show open to members of the public, or is it trade only?

Also hats off to Jur, who works very hard at this show and sharpens so many knives I think he goes home and probably sharpens in his sleep for a few days. Thank you Jur! :D

There's just something soothing and relaxing about seeing that much steel in one area.

Thanks for pics, they're awesome. :p

Ditto to what the Deac' said Wouter...shoot, I am just glad you titled it with the IWA. Otherwise, the pics could probably pass for Jurphaas and sal cruising over at either the Deacon's or UK KEN's house, checking out their collections! :D

Very nice. God bless and Groeten aan je vrouw.

Aloha Terminator B,

Hey, them egg looking thingies are simply glass aquarium ornaments I believe...I had some of those when we had a few fighting fish. Either that, or they're gonna peel open at the top and some face hugging :spyder: 's will emerge!
(Or better yet, a collab from Alex and I will emerge! :D )

God bless and take care Knifebro

Now that's what I'd call a Face Hugger...

Me. With my face hugging the glass of the case THAT prototype is in ;)
