they sell Spydies at your walmart? maybe they do at mine as well.. this is to be looked into. at the very least pick up a Byrd or two.

Spyderco only supplies S30V Natives at Wal-Mart.

Thanks!! This has turned out to be a really fun knife! Incase you were wondering here's the breakdown. Black Micarta scales with titanium liners, Black SE S30V Blade and a Titanium clip. This is my first knife with Micarta, and now I'm hooked. Next up is my ZDP Caly! :cool:

Here are pics of one that Chax did for me a while back. His pics are better than mine too :) It originated as a G10 (blue inlay) Native. I wanted the mammoth ivory alone, it was way too unstable.

So you're the one(boxer93) with that Mammoth Native. I saw that on their website a while black and fell in love. That truly is a beautiful knife! :cool:

Does it say "438 of 500" on the blade? :confused: Was that one of those G-10 with shell inlay natives? :eek:

That looks great, txtroublemaker! How does the width and general handle dimensions compare to the standard FRN Native? How about weight?

I hope the Native 4 looks a lot like txtroublemaker's!

The width on my custom Native is just a hair wider than the regular FRN Native. As far as the weight, its a little heavier, but not too much. I like knives that have a little heft to them. Here's a side by side pic to compare them. Enjoy!

J Smith as for your question is there going to be a Native 4, I personally don’t think so because the native 3 is the perfection of the native model.

And on another topic I think txtroublemaker may be in a little trouble (no pun intended) boxer93 ivory native is like totally kickass, that’s one for the archives

The Spacer bar/spring holder is the same size. Its the lock bar that was modified on the custom. Notice the Boye detent is gone on the custom. This wasn't really planned so much as necessary for a more balanced look. It just worked out that way. I adjusted the lock on it because I just didn't like the way it came from the factory. The lock bar didn't seat all the way down to mate with the blade like I have seen in other Spydies. In correcting it though it changed the dynamic of the way the lock bar sat in the back (it raised the back up the same amount as it allowed the front to seat down) by where you depress it. So it had to be adjusted to make it work with the new seat position of the lock bar in the blade. In the end the lock is much stronger now and has much more meat connecting it to the blade. Overall I think it made it a better more trustworthy user even if the Boye detent did have to go. I know I sure got a confident feel out of it in the hand. The thing is a cutting machine and rock solid now with no give compared to the way it was.

As for the weight: All the knives with a metal liner will have a bit more heft to them than one without liners. The difference is not noticed much in the pocket or in the hand though unless the knife is a large one. If the knife is real big sometimes I'll skeletonize the liners to lighten it some. On a knife the size of the Native this isn't necessary though.

I sure am glad the expert chimed in! You are absolutely right about the lockup on this thing, it has a very authoritive snap when it locks up. Thanks again STR, you made one badass knife for me! :D
